Talking Disappointed after Boost Gauge Install

Well, to get straight to the point. I installed a boost gauge because I was curious as to what kinda boost I was getting with my supercharger. It's a paxton sn93 with upgraded impeller, stock pulley. It only hit 5 psi, and I was figuring to hit at least 8 psi. It runs at 17 hg under normal driving conditions. Does 5 psi sound normal? If so. I was thinking of going with a smaller pulley for the supercharger. But I did lots of searching and paxton isn't around anymore, so if anyone knows where I can find one, that would be great! Also what size pulley would give me 8 psi and do you think my engine could handle it? I have forged pistons and eagle sport connecting rods. One more question. Can I get an intercooler or aftercooler setup with my existing set up? Thanks.

Vortech bought paxton so they are still around. If you don't like your blower, upgrade to the Novi 2000. It will push plenty of boost = 30psi. That enough? LOL.

Sure, I was thinking of that. But who has an extra $10,000 burning a hole in their pocket.lol Since vortech bought paxton, I'm assuming I'll be able to get the paxton pulley through them..

Or.... you can go to Reichard Racing for the ultra-grip/non slip pulley

For all the Paxton "Balldrive" info SN type superchargers check this forum: http://superchargerhelp.com/

Impeller Speed Calculations:

Crank Dia.
------ x RPM x Blower Ratio = Impeller Speed
Blower Dia.

Internal Blower Ratio for blowers.
ATI P-600 3.05=1
ATI P1-SC 4.10=1
ATI D1-SC 4.10=1
ATI D1-SC 4.10=1
ATI D1-(all) 4.44=1
ATI F-(all) 5.10=1
* Paxton SN 4.44=1 *
Paxton NOVI 3.54=1
Paxton GSS 4.40=1
Vortech V-1 3.45=1
Vortech V-2SQ 3.61=1
Powerdyne DB11 3.05=1

Your absolute maximum impeller speed for the Paxton SN93 = 45,000 rpm !!
Higher then that the blower will distroi itself becouse of the heat.

Re: Disappointed after Boost Gauge Install

Intercooler would have almost no function becouse of the low pressure and would also drop your boost with around 1 psi or so.

Re: Disappointed after Boost Gauge Install

Cool, thanks for all the info. I'm looking into buying one of the pulleys from online. I definitely wanna try the one where it reduces belt slip. Anyone have the setup where you have 3 extra injectors on top the manifold? Also, if so, what lb injectors are they? I was wondering if that was standard. I bought the car like that. Thanx for any more input.

All ATI F1/F2 variants have a 5:40 gear unless its a NMRA specific model and then its 5:00.

F3 is another story altogether. None have a 5:10.

(at the bottom) http://www.aspracing.com/cog.htm
For the Paxton the 4.44 stays.
The Paxton GSS is 4.44 also btw

Very good info. Also, another option to consider if you decide to go with ASP is a larger crank pulley. This way you have more surface area for grip so you don't have to tighten the belt so much, less slippage. Crank will cost you twice as much but be easier to swap. Sounds like that Paxton is barely better than the Powerdyne as far as max impellor RPM goes. May want to switch to a better used blower like a V1 or V2 or an ATI.

Re: Disappointed after Boost Gauge Install

Yeah I'll definitely look into the larger crank pulley too. I agree with the paxton barely being better than the powerdyne. Although they might be about the same. I mean I even have the upgraded impeller and it's still only at 5psi on a modified engine. I definitely thought that was low since the stock sn93 is rated between 5-7 psi from the factory. I'd really like to go with a newer model, but not sure if I could afford it right now. Any huge modifications if I do happen to go that route? I'm sure it's not as simple as just taking the old one out and putting the new one in right? lol

Post a "gauging interest" sale in the classifieds here and see what people might be willing to give you for yours. Then if you can find say an ATI P600B or Vortech V1 S-Trim for just a few hundred more, you're in pretty good shape. It will likely be a hassle throughout much of the bartering process though.

Also depends on your mid term to long term power goals too, if you don't want a sh!tload, you can do pretty well with 6 PSI or so on a stockish motor if you get everything right (tuned/modded properly).

My Powerdyne has been upgraded recently at 9K miles and should put out roughly 7 PSI on this built heads/cam 355. Going to drive it in the next few days here. I'm going to give it one more run, if something fails on it I will fix it just to sell it. At that point I'll run N/A for awhile until I find a good deal on a used S-Trim. The S-Trim V1 (or esp V2) is my choice for a budget blower capable of reliably giving me 500+ at the wheels, that's the goal.

Re: Disappointed after Boost Gauge Install

You switch brackets also becouse the Paxton SN types have ther own brackets that nothing else fits.
I don't know how accurat this page is, but the Paxton SN 93 flows around 750 cfm regardless of how much boost it gives thats got to mean something to.

http://www.superchargersonline.com/content.asp?id=6

The Paxton VR4 flows 1400 cfm but it is not made anymore.
