custom-built turbo?
custom-built turbo?
i want to add some serious power to my v6 camaro. i was looking into a turbo kit, but theyre pretty pricey. so my friend suggested to build one, as his friend built his own. it cost him $1600, which is half the price of a kit. im thinking of going with a t3/t4 turbo. i have two questions, however:
1) can someone give me a COMPLETE list of what i'd need to build a turbo? (i have a list, but i might be missing some things)
2) what other mods do i have to do my camaro to make sure it withstands the turbo? i know the exhaust and intake, but what else?
thanks in advance!

Re: custom-built turbo?
Lets see...
Turbo (obvious)
a cross over
t3/t4 flanges
a wastegate
a blow off valve
an intercooler (not required, but nice to have)
associated intake tubing
bigger fuel pump
a boost control ****
boost gauge
Either an FMU/BTM box or a 2 bar map and a computer that can read it.
If you're going to build your own headers then you will need flanges and mandrel bends along with a welder.
I know the V6 motors don't have the same compression an LT1 or LS1 does, but some forged pistons might still be a good idea.

Re: custom-built turbo?
Is this a 3.4 or 3.8 V6? If its a 3.8, then don't use a T3/T4. The T3 housing is to small and causes backpressure problems. The GN's have the same basic cubes and all run a T4 or equivalent 3 bolt version.

i dont exactly have to build my headers, i can purchase some right?
the compression ratio for the 3800 II v6 is 9.4 to 1

FMU for fuel, or larger injectors and retune the PCM
BTM to retard timing under boost, or retune the PCM if it will recognize a 2-bar MAP sensor.. stock is 1-bar
Don't know of anyone building turbo headers for the 3.8, unless you adapt some GN ones maybe?
