BOV worth my money????

Hey right now im running a 8 psi D1SC kit and the stock bypass vavle. Im wondering if switching to a BOV will do anything different for me? I also have a automatic. Mainly im wondering if it will blow off as loud as some on the turbo cars around? Thanks.

Re: BOV worth my money????

Well, with a supercharger you will need to run a bypass valve rather than a BOV.

A bypass valve is open under idle and part throttle conditions, therefore bypassing the extra air the engine is not using.

A BOV is always closed except after lifting off the throttle after a boost condition. (turbo cars do not always have excess air to bypass)

The stock ATI bypass valves do not flow alot of air, but it should be sufficient if it's pullied for 8lbs. A higher boost car should definitely run a bigger bypass valve.

Cool Re: BOV worth my money????

I use the vortech blue race bypass valve. It has worked perfectly, no problems and it is not that loud at all. You could easily make it mount onto the twin intercooler piping by welding on a steel mounting flange, which is also available from vortech.

I have an HKS BOV as well as the stock ATI bypass valve. I vent to atmosphere.

candidly I do NOT like the set up. I will be trying to muffle the bypass valve soon via an air filter and I'm not kean on the HKS valve. I would not do it again.

Re: BOV worth my money????

Absolutely
Most blow-off valves arent application specific
You can mount almost any BOV on your charge piping before the intake manifold and it will do what it needs to do.
Different BOVs obviously sound different and can be tuned a bit differently.

Sounds like you just want a loud
Pfshhh

Just see what other people have to say and listen to other BOVs so you can decide what you want.

Hey Holy old thread. So if I get the vent to atmosphere bypass valve will the noise be there or not. I just want people to hear and fear the blower.

Re: BOV worth my money????

Sorry guys but it will never sound like a turbo car. I have the same bov, greddy type 'R' on my Typhoon and on my 355 procharged D-1 smallblock. Same 14lbs of boost to.
First off BOV's are open at part throttle or anytime there is not the same pressure on the diaphram as in the pipe. They only stay shut when the boost pressure is on the diaphram the pressure plus the sping pressure is what keeps a BOV shut. When there is more air in the pipe than on the diaphram the valve opens. If i hold my car at 2500 you can feel the air coming out of the valve as there is no pressure.
When I am just cruising in the turbo i don't hear a noise out of it and when I lift i here the big whooosh.
The blower you hear a constant chirping noise when cruising and since the blower turns in relation to RPM as soon as you get off the gas the engine slows the blower down so no big Whoosh, just a faint one.

Yeah I was bummed to BUT you still need one or you will constantly break belts and blow pipes off.

It sounds like you just need to adjust it some (if that's possible with yours). My TurboXS BOV has a spring in it to keep it shut at idle. I had to shim the spring to increase the pressure holding it shut. The way it is now, it probably takes a good 20# for me to push the BOV open with my hands. No sound at Idle, big loud PSSSSHhhhhhhhhhhh coming off boost. Ladies wet panties. This is a Procharged LT1.

You must not use a cog belt. Yes you are correct to adjust the spring to keep it closed at idle and then the pressure differentil takes care of the rest. We tried to adjust it tthat wat to get rid of the chirping but it just destroyed belts.

Re: BOV worth my money????

No cogged belt. I was running the stock ATI bypass valve as well as the BOV at the same time. The bypass was recirculated, and the BOV vented.
