Boost Bypass Question... Please Help!

I am running a vortech supercharger on my 96 LT1 Camaro. I am running a front mount Intercooler so my plumbing is running up the passenger side and then going into the throttle body. My question is do I have to have a Boost bypass valve that vents into the the unboosted side of my intake behind the mass air flow sensor. Can I just run the bypass like a blowoff valve and let it blow off into the atmosphere? It's going to be a pain to run the additional vent line ontop of everything else in the way so if I don't have to I'd like not too.

Thanks for the help,
Brandon

It all depends where your MAF is. You dont want to meter air then just expel it. So you can let the bypass air go into the atmosphere if you have your MAF after the BP valve or if your MAF is before the BP valve, you need to put the air back into the motor or the MAF will be reporting more air than the engine is getting.

Yeah, but since it is a mass air flow car I think I'll have to have the MAF in the unboosted side. There's no telling how that thing will react when the bypass valve lets all the boost out in between shifts. At least with it being in the unboosted portion of the intake tube the only fluxuation It will have will be the speeding up and slowing down of the supercharger... hmmm Looks like I'm gonna have to do the plumbing afterall the more I think about it..... Any other ideas???

We have a "Forced Induction" forum. I'll move your post there.

You'll get better driveability and throttle response if you put the MAF on the pressure side close to the throttle body. Also venting to atmosphere will help cool the head unit and iat's. Well worth your time to do this mod. The newer procharger kits do it this way.

So let me make sure I'm getting this right. Move my MAF Sensor closer to my TB and basically attach the filter straight to the supercharger with nothing monitoring the flow of the un boosted side... Sounds like an easy thing to do, just are we sure it wont mess up the MAF Sensor Readings when the bypass valve purges? Thanks for the great input.

It doesn't matter where you put the MAF. As long as the engine is getting exactlly what the MAF metered. If you put the MAF on the pressure side (up toward the throttle body), then you don't want any BOV or BPV AFTER the MAF. Then you would lose some of the air you just metered. Put the BOV before the MAF somewhere in this case. If you prefer to keep the MAF on the suck side of the blower, then you must use a BPV and plumb the output of the BPV back down into the suck side of the blower AFTER the MAF because this air has already been metered and should stay in the system after where the MAF is mounted. This all make sense? Again, the MAF doesn't care where it's at, just as long at the air that just went through it gets into the engine, no more, no less. Also, the straighter the shot of air into the MAF, the better. Try and keep it away from being really close to a hard bend in your intake tubing.
