Question Big HP guys. What's your exhaust setup?

For the guys w/ 700+rwhp what is your exhaust setup? This is mainly for the S/C guys as the turbo's are using mainfolds for the most part.

Want to know if I need to ditch my exhaust setup. FLP headers no cats and GMMG exhaust. I keep reading the chamber will be a restriction and if so is by alot like 40hp etc? I like the 4" Mufflex w/ the single hideaway tip but don't care for the fact it's not SS and heavier than Ms Piggy w/ Kermit on her lap. I hear it's loud as hell too and that is a concern to a extent. People like using the magnaflow w/ the mufflex. Anyone hear doing that?

So what are you guys using? Thanks

Re: Big HP guys. What's your exhaust setup?

I made 550 rwhp through a 3" Hooker crossflow Aerochamber. Removed the muffler and only gained 5 rwhp. That was a 383, AFR 210's, 224/236, Hooker LT's, Aftercooled Vortech T-trim, 13 psi, TH350/loose converter.

Based on this favorable result, I used a 3.5" Aerochamber on my single turbo build. These results were not-so favorable. I don't have before/after dyno numbers, but my exhaust pressure between the engine and the turbocharger is 20+ psi higher than it should be. I unhooked the cat-back and exhaust pressure dropped from 48 psi down to <35 psi.

No idea how much power we make but its in the 700 neighbourhood.
Have some pics on the exhaust setup here http://home.koping.net/u3243a/vinter...er%2004-05.htm
SLP headers, 4" catback, flow true muffler ( No cat now)

Old setup that made 570rwhp http://home.koping.net/u3243a/avgassystem.htm Hooker shoorties, 3,5" that turn to 3" after the rear axel, after replacing the "chambered" muffler widh a 3,5" flow true and raised the boost widh 1psi we made 600rwhp...

Re: Big HP guys. What's your exhaust setup?

Sorry, not yout ideal cannidate.... Dont know what HP i have yet

BUT im running Hooker LTs, Muflez 3'' to 4 inch y-pipe, hooker 4''-3'' reducer, SLP TOTL Catback(no cone of silence)

Just a FYI on the SLP TOTL... I made 14 more HP on the dyno on a stock car with the TOTL over a 40 series Flowmaster. There was a huge SOTP feel difference between the two. The TOTL sounds the best in my opinion and i like the look as well.

I know im not really comparing apple to apple,(but its close enough) The mufflex 4'' i believe uses a 40 series flowmaster.....and honestly, i wouldn't put one on my car if it was free.
14hp on a stock car would be closer to ~40+ on a car with 2.5 times the power.

When my car final feels slower to me(dont think its gunna happen soon) i plan on pullying down and i may go to a 4'' system with a straight through design like the SLP TOTL. I believe magnaflow makes those

P.S.....make sure you get long tubes, they are a must on any application minus turbo

Comments on the Mufflex 4" w/ Flowmaster:

I can't comment on restriction of the single 4" Flowmaster muffler however.

Cons: Heavy, hangs low, fit is marginal to poor with Mufflex Y/catback and Hooker LTs, sounds flat and resonates at some lower rpm levels

Pros: Sounds awesome at idle and screams when your 'on cam'.

I second that. I've seen 30 - 40 rwhp just by removing a Flowmaster muffler. Same goes for Spintech. Both are junk and i can't figure out why these are the only 2 that Mufflex offers.

I'm running Kooks stepped race headers and their Y pipe with a mufflex. What's wrong with the spintech muffler?

My friend has a 3rd gen, '87 IROC, with a 406 in it. AFR210's, Victor Jr, Holley 750, Hooker LT's, flat tappet ~240 cam, etc. . . It was running consistent 117 mph at the track and we thought it should run better. We removed the 4" SpinTech and the next pass was 120 mph.

Mike,

What 4" muffler do you recommend? Also, I see that removing 'a' muffler did some good but how can you quantify that a spintech is any worse than another in the above senerio?

Thanks,

-Scott.

Re: Big HP guys. What's your exhaust setup?

In my opinion, if you gain more than .1 and 1 mph from removing a muffler, then it's no good. We've had really good luck with the Hooker Aerochambers, but only below 650 rwhp (auto). Beyond that and I think the best bet is a 3.5" - 4" straight through muffler like the Dynatech, Dynomax Race, or similar.

I dynoed 593 rwhp with my cut out open; with the cutout closed I loose 15 HP. A cut-out is a cheap way to loose any restriction caused by the muffler (for the track) or street if you go with an electric cut-out.

>I have a stroker 396 with a Vortech T-trim and Nitrous Works and I use Banks Stinger exhaust ( which sounds real "throaty" ) with Edlebrock shorties and Random Technology cats then went to JetHot long tubes (just got Kooks long tubes). I had the catback
since 1998 and still looks good/sounds great
BTW- the tips are polished real nicely.
