Re: Banks Twin Turbo Setup NOW for Sale

I know the banks kit won't go on an LT1, but I was wondering about just the turbos and manifolds.. only clearance issue would be the turbos to hood.. maybe when someone gets a kit we can get some measurements as to how high the hairdryers are above the valve covers.

And it may interfere with the stock acc bracket on the passenger side, but a low mount alternator would cure that...

Banks didn't specify why they went with the manifolds over headers, but i'm guessing that they used them to keep as much heat in the exhaust system as possible and to minimize the volume between the heads and turbos for faster spooling. The manifolds at least attempt to align the exhaust pulses and aim them towards the turbine though, unlike a log-style header. Probably much cheaper to make too <--- probably the biggest reason they went with them.

The intake manifold seems reminicent of a super ram... probably an attempt to get the slight ramming effect that is possible with a FI setup.

Just speculating.

Here are the dimensions for the banks twin turbo setup...

From the center of the crankshaft to top of the intake(turbos are lower than intake) is 22 1/4

From turbo to turbo is 35" MAX Wide

Fron Pulley to Bellhousing flange is 29"

I think width would be the only problem for a 4th gen..?

Banks rep says the turbos sit about 3" lower than the plenum, so figure 20" to be safe. Now we need to get a measurement on the width under a 4th gen hood. I think the ABS will need to be relocated, although the turbo may be above it. Also need to look at the accessory stuff; alternator looks to be the main issue there..

I dunno guys, this may be something to consider for a turbo setup, using the manifolds, turbos and wastegates, then fabbing up your own intake piping. The Banks website says they are running 9 psi on 91 octane, without intercooling. (8-8.5 comp ratio)

You could probably get away with using one of the Speed Specialty alternator relocation kits. I'm sure one of the two would work.

Re: Banks Twin Turbo Setup NOW for Sale

Well, it's been a while since I looked at a stock 4th gen, but judging by this pic, the alternator will be in the way of the turbo...
but then again, the over head view of the Banks setup in the info pdf I have shows the turbo to be pretty much outside the valve cover on the pass. side...

If anything, the height of the Banks mounting should be ok, but the width needs to be researched more...

Then reclock the outlets on the turbos, down to an intercooler and back up..

piece o' cake!

Thumbs up Re: Banks Twin Turbo Setup NOW for Sale

Thought this might help since I hadn't seen a price dropped yet.

"Chuck,
Hey, thanks for the reply. I was beginning to wonder if someone was going to respond to my inquiry. I appreciate the response.. I have a 95 Z28 with the LT1 motor in it. I realize that you all are building complete ( engine/ turbo) packages but how much is the kit itself and are the manifolds designed for the SB2 cyl D port heads or is there a special bolt pattern etc... that you have?

I'd like to have a street driven twin turbo terror, any problems that you all have had or clearance issues ( hood, or wheel arches) on these cars? steering clearance or relocation of any specific parts?

Finally, it all boils down to price.. What are we talking about for a basic add on kit to my built long block...

Thanks for your time. Have a great day.

Response:

Yes, the system will fit with in a late Camaro.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
No clearance issues on that vehicle that I'm aware of and the cost is
$5,995 for the bolt on system.

Re: Banks Twin Turbo Setup NOW for Sale

Is that expensive for a complete twin turbo'd setup that runs 800hp on 91octance?

That answer was too easy. I'm sure relocating suff would need to be done. I wonder what the entire motor and turbos would run with engine management, intercooler, and the whole shebang.

Yeah, I thought it was a simplistic reply myself without real substantive mental effort on his part for someone interested in dropping 6K...

Personally, I don't see how it would just fit in the bay without some serious relocation of some parts?

Re: Banks Twin Turbo Setup NOW for Sale

Complete engine goes for around 35K, less intercooler or ECM. It is setup to plug and play with the Accel DFI, so add $1500 for the ECM.
I look at it as another route to go for the hot parts; and fab up the rest on my own. Would be interesting to see how it all would go into a 4th gen (if I had the cash and car! ).

Is there another twin turbo kit even available?

You could run true duals on a car and then use two STS kits.

Re: Banks Twin Turbo Setup NOW for Sale

I had Nelson build my 434 that I put the Banks twins on. Here's a pic, I got the turbo parts last week. The carb is there only to hold up the plenum for the pics. It will be EFI. I'll also be going with an intercooler.
