Attention Vortech owners!
Attention Vortech owners!
I want to let all of you know that the vaccum line on the OPTI that goes to the inlet of the blower may cause you some problems in the future. It appears that if your air intake pulls in water from either rain, washing your car, etc. it may find it's way into your OPTI. I just pulled mine apart (had 700 miles on it) because I was throwing all sort of codes(33,36,42,51) and when I turned the key on the car would go crazy, guages bouncing all over the place, fuel pump and fans cycling on and off. Then if I unplugged the harness to the OPTI it would stop. So any way when I pulled the OPTI apart it was very corroded in the optical portion and there was water in that vacuum line that led straight to the optical sensor and caused it to ground out. Good luck, Rob.
Re: Attention Vortech owners!
is that the vaccuum line that is supposed to keep the opti free from moisture? i know that the earlier opties didnt have a way to get rid of condensation and it caused the opti to go bad earlie.....a problem they fixed in like 95 or 96.
same line?
same line?
Re: Attention Vortech owners!
Yes, same line. I'm beginning to think GM's attempt at preventing moisture may actually be helping it. At least when you connect it to the intake of the blower. When I pulled my OPTI apart it looked like it was the orginal OPTI with thousands of miles on it when in actuality it had 700 miles on it. I should have taken pictures to show everyone. I installed the Delteq setup while I was at it so I just plugged up the vent plug since I'm not worried about the Ozone buidlup in the cap portion anymore. By the way Delteq kicks butt! Easy to install and definately a noticable gain in performance.
Re: Attention Vortech owners!
can you email me some info on that Delteq. i thought i was dealing with bad plugs/wires.....but im thinking that maybe this is my problem.
i think vortech was mistaken in routing that line to the intake. i was actually pretty dissappointed in the quality of their kit during the install. the supercharger makes good power but a lot of the stuff in the kit was just kinda "jerry rig" type stuff. not to mention all the parts i had to replace/modify with their kit just to make it work. there was a lot of stuff that was the wrong size/threads....etc...
thanks,
jeremy

Re: Attention Vortech owners!
You can get all the info you ned about the DELTEQ at Elitesparkplugs.com. James is the owner and he is very helpful. As for the quality of the kit it is very good. It comes with everything you need. If you're running headers I would get cut to fit plug wires instead of the ones they come with. They are for putting back through the stock location. It really woke the car up. If you are having OPTI problems you need to get that straightened up first before installing the DELTEQ, it needs a good signal from the OPTI to work. About the Vortech kit, you have to remember it was designed to put on a stock engine so I can see why they had to "Jerry rig" some things. Another thing about the Vortech kit is the ignition it comes with. The OPTI wasn't designed to see the increase in voltage that the Crane or MSD ignition boxes put out and I believe that shortens their life as well. If you run the DELTEQ you won't be able to use that ignition box anymore because it is for a single coil setup, so you have to find another way to retard the timing during boost. So far I have had no detonation problems without a boost retard. If you have anymore questions just ask, I have become intimately familiar with these OPTI's. The DELTEQ system is one of the most cost beneficial modifications I've done to the car. Good luck, Rob.
Re: Attention Vortech owners!
how long have you been running your SC? everyone keeps telling me that my motors going to blow with the SC and stock internals.
im running everything that came with the vortech kit.....

Re: Attention Vortech owners!
I put it on the car with 50,000 miles I now have 64,000. Building a forged 383 as we speak. I'm putting the bottom end together tomorrow. Going to run a splayed 4 bolt with a Callies crank and rods, SRP pistons and going with a bigger cam Comp 227/239. All from Combination Motorsports. I'm not having any problems with my current setup, just a little blow-bye. Also running a T-trim and putting the S-trim on a 97 WS-6. Looking to get around 600 RWHP if I can get the tune right. People usually blow holes in the factory pistons after too much abuse or getting too crazy with the boost. Stick with 6#'s and don't get in it all the time and you'll be fine. When you start to see blow-bye from the valve covers thats usually a sign your rings are going.
