Anyone running the powerdyne?
Anyone running the powerdyne?
I wanna put the 4.5psi kit on my car. It's a weekend cruiser and I dont want a huge boost from it. I would like a 50hp increase or thereabout. Anyone have any success? I'm not spending more than 3 grand on a super charger... if the powerdyne cant give me 50hp then ill just do a full LE2 heads and cam.
Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
do yourself a favor and get a 6 psi pulley or kit. The stock tensioner in thier kit sucks and you'll need to either fab up something else or go smaller pulley which isnt always the best thing. I havent bolted mine on yet, but I have a few pulleys and the best way I could see was going bigger on the crank pulley instead of smaller on the s/c pulley for more grip area. This combined with a different tensioner setup I should be able to actually get about 8-10 psi out of this thing. I will let everyone know when its in and we shall see. Im bound and determined to prove people wrong about powerdyne. Granted its not the best kit out there, but it is cheap, and will give you performance, its just a mtter of picking up the ball where Powerdyne dropped it and finishing the kit the right way. If you dont want to mess with any of this scenario I wouldnt suggest buying a 4.5 psi kit unless you get a 7" crank pulley which should get you about 6psi. Dont forget you'll need a better fuel pump, and injectors, a blow off/bypass valve, and a tune to keep this thing together. Biggest problem with powerdynes is the belt/bearings. Bearings overspun constantly=BOOM. No bypass puts stress on the belt when you close the throttle and tears the belt up. This is all that I have learned so far about these units and although it doesnt sound all that good, like i said, with this knowledge.....you can make this kit perform. Others have, and still are.
Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
I dont plan on over 6000 rpms. What tensioner are you going to use? Im getting the racetronix fuel pump kit and some 36# injectors. What blow off valve are you thinking about using?

The powerdyne SUXS! I used to have it and even with a custom 15LB pulley I was only showing 6 PSI. PLEASE dont waste your money. If you are going to go with a supercharger go with either a Vortec or a Procharger. spend the extra cash now and you will be glad you did. there is nothing like the feal of boost. Trust me its like everyone else says. "once you have boost you will NEVER go back" It is true! If you are only looking for 50-100 HP go for N20. dont waste the time and money on a SC. But like I said if you do decide to go FI go with a good name brand. Just search the forums for powerdyne and see how many people are unhappy with there units. This is just my $.02 take it for what its wort but I have had all 3.

Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
I don't like telling someone to not do something he thinks he wants to do but...
If you are only looking for 50 hp, a supercharger isn't for you. You said you didn't want to spend more than 3k on one. Think about it, if you spent 3k on something and got your 50 hp, would you be happy? I hope not. You could buy a nice nitrous setup and spray 50 to it all day long on a bottle. And spend a lot less money.
I would consider that cam/head kit and/or nitrous. Or a supercharger that makes some boost.
Just my opinion.

Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
I have the 9 lb pulley and I'm showing 6+ lb vs the 4.5 with the 6 lb pulley.
I recommend the bypass valve which can be bought directly from powerdyne especially if you go with the 9 lb pulley which is under 100.00.
After doing my cam and heads we t'd in the BPvalve.
There wasn't enough vaccuum and the belt would squeak getting off the throttle quickly after boost.
Now with the BPvalve hooked up directly to the brake vaccuum there's no more belt slip from doing mini burnouts in my driveway.
For more money a powerdyne can be sent out and improved with air cooled bearings and higher operating speeds so you then can run a 12-14 lb pulley combination
Of course if you wanted that much boost you'de have to beef up the bottom end.

I like my powerdyne.
It's whisper quiet and I've put 10,000 miles on it.
The 9 lb pulley makes the boost come on quicker and the car is a real torquer.
With the 62 cc Trickflow heads I have a 9.75 to 1 compression ratio which works out great for a supercharged engine.
If it's a street car and you get it cheap powerdyne
definately makes some power and can be improved.
But if you're a more serious racer and after starting small want 10 psi or more of boost or want some noise out of the thing then Vortec or Procharger would be the way to go. I've seen them go used for under 2000.00 on ebay.
You can start out pulleyed to 6 or 8 max lbs and then go from there later.

Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
I dont want to put too much stress on the motor. Stock bottom end wont take too much abuse from forced induction at the higher boost end. 8psi ok for a stock bottom end?
2cub49 how much power did you pick up from the blower?

Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
My car `had`about 105,000 miles when I put the blower on.
I had no problems showing 6+ lbs with the 9 lb pulley
and the extra FMU for the higher boost and the MSD ignition box from the 6 lb kit.
I had Madwolf tune my car.
It ran fine with the higher compression heads but 8 lb would be the max on a stock bottom end IMO.
It would cost an extra 600.00+ over the 4.5 kit to have the FMU, MSD Ignition, Bypass valve and 9 lb pulley
which is what I have.

Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
I have a powerdyne on my 95 with 396 with 6lb pulley and get about 4lbs.
I talked to Carl at 928 motorsport the firt time and he said the racer rebuild
would push 10 or 12lbs,the second time i talked to him he said it all depends.
His web site says the blower will have a operating range of 40,000 rpm and a
cealing of 60,000 rpm.,is this boost or just heat expansion.
I don,t mind spending the money if it would give 80 to 100 hp more but if it,s
no good why waist the time and money.Carl doesn,t seem to want to talk to
much because he is to busy.So i,am wondering what do you guys think,
Rick Kruse or any one else that would give there knowledge would be very helpful.
Thanks a lot guys

Re: Anyone running the powerdyne?
Let me ask you something,.......did you address belt slip at all? That is the biggest problem with these kits and if you want the performance they are capable of, you need to address that right off the bat. Smaller pulley on the supercharger IS NOT the answer as the smaller pulley offers less belt contact surface and actually negates the gain by slipping more with the stock tensioner. Look at that thing, its lame, so lame its not even funny. If we all had money, yes, we would all go out and buy the best, but we dont. So us inventive/creative guys take what we can get for cheap, modify it to work the way it should, and wallah. Nothing better than the feeling of finding those ponies that you thought were lost, then going out and whooping up on some **** that costs way more. Gives me warm fuzzies, LOL.
But if you're just looking to bolt something on and go, then yeah, go for a used vortech or procharger. If you have the skills, the drive, and enjoy projects like this, id say spend the cash for a cheap powerdyne and get what you want out of it as it sounds like you're not wanting all that much. N2O isnt always there, it costs $ to keep it full. Id rather have the power there all the time.
