4 bolt splayed caps on rebuild
4 bolt splayed caps on rebuild
Guys,
I'm going with a forged 383, LE2 heads, and a D1 with the SDCE tensioner. Since the motor is apart I'm contemplating whetheror not to spend the extra $500 on a 4 bolt splayed main cap conversion. I talked to the engine builder and he said if it was his car that he would just go with ARP main studs and that the caps were overkill unless I was planning on making more than 650 rwhp.
What do you guys think? I don't know if I plan on going with n20 or maybe upgrade to a F1 blower in the future.

Go ahead and do it now. Much more expensive to go back into the motor, if you happen to decide that you want to make more power. Looks like you're already considering that anyway.
Re: 4 bolt splayed caps on rebuild
20 years ago I made well over 600 hp on a plain old 2-bolt 454 out of a station wagon, shifting at 7500; thus proving that good block prep goes a long way.
Having said that, it will NEVER be cheaper to do the conversion than it will be right now, so why not buck up?
