2 potential Vortech install problems - looking ahead

Ok - got a blower - used - doesn't have the fitting for tapping the pan. Manual calls for 3/8" NPT - 1/2 barb

Went to the hardware store and picked up the piece and also a 1/2" x 9" hose. Hose doesn't fit the barbed end - hmmm - and the 3/8" portion that is supposed to be threaded into the pan is awfully big, like the size of a nickel. Supposedly these pieces are NPT but maybe they are not.

Also manual calls for 1/4" x 3" npt to thread into the block and the other end into the pressure line. The pressure line does not fit the fitting that I bought.

Something tells me that both fittings I bought are incorrect - either in size or type. They do read the correct size so maybe they are not NPT like I was told.

I've also read about a self tapping 3/8" x 1/2" barbed fitting - anyone else know if this is made?

Will vortech send me these pieces or are these readily available at your local hardware store?

Thanks

If you can hold a nickle up to the 3/8 NPT, and it's the same size you more than likely have 1/2" NPT fitting. 1/2"NPT is slightly smaller than a nickle it fits inside the ridge on a nickle.

Is the 1/2" hose you bought, 1/2 " ID(inside diameter)?

I have an ATI kit, on the oil feed line I used a stainless braided line. I bought the kit used also so not sure what I was supposed to use. I hooked it up with a 1/4"NPTx 1/4" Flare fitting.

Hope this help you out

ive actually put a 3/8 NPT to a 1/2 inch barbed on my oil pan.

threading it is a bitch and your oil pan isnt thick in the slightest so i suggest taking your oil pan off and having a bung welded on, its a little more hastle but if your threaded fitting starts leaking oil youll be pissed off you didnt just do it in the first place.

i also have the ati kit.

As much as I hate to say it, I can live with patching a small oil leak if it comes down to that. I am pulling the engine this winter and it's already August so...

This coming from a guy who fought the leaking wp seal for 2 years. Now that sucked!

I think what i've done is bought a 3/8" barbed end and a 1/2" npt end. Not sure what happened on the 1/4" one tho.

I have to take the pressure hose to a store with me - seems it would be a compression fitting to me. Not sure tho

its been a while since i did mine but i did have issues with finding a tap the right size. it was something weird that the NPT changes when the diameter of the hole changes. i finally found a guy who happened to have "the right" 3/8" npt tap. i couldnt find the right tap anywhere. sears didnt even have one. as long as you find a tap and make sure that it is the same size and thread type as your brass fitting it doesnt really matter. then use a sealant to paste around the fitting after youve got it in the pan. ive had no leaks from mine.

just some advise. i finally found a punch big enough in diameter to make the hole @ harbor freight (not sure if you have one in your area). it was brass and thank god for that. once you get the hole started with a few smaller punches and you get to the big dog punch youve got to go pretty deep with it to get your desired diameter. and the deeper you go, your gonna hit your crankshaft (dont do that). so i had to punch a little, then cut the punch, hammer a little, cut the punch, and so on. needless to say the punch was worthless when all done but oh well, it was like 3 bucks.

and most importantly, DO NOT MAKE THE HOLE TOO BIG!!!!!!!! i almost made mine too big. use grease on the tap. tap it out, then take your time screwing the piece in, it would be really easy to strip the brass threads or the soft threads you just made. make sure its screwing in right, then tighten it down. i wouldnt recommend taking it in and out.

good luck.
