Y pipe question

General question without getting too involved in the particulars....Could having a y-pipe (shorty header style) in contact with the oil pan cause a false knock condition, causing a timing pull that may be mistaken for vibration above 2500 rpm? I don't have any live data at that rpm....just a thought...anyone have experience with this?

Re: Y pipe question

I wouldn't think so. But it could cause a hole in your oil pan and then a serious knock to follow

Re: Y pipe question

It's barely touching, and seeing how it is smooth....moves with the engine...can't see a rub through happening. Thanks for the input though.

Re: Y pipe question

The Y-pipe is firmly bolted to the manifold (or headers). The manifolds (or headers) are firmly bolted to the heads. The only movement of the Y-pipe relative to the oil pan will be a tiny amount of thermal expansion as the Y-pipe heats up.

Yes, if the exhaust is in contact with the pan, the exhaust noise will be transmitted to the pan, and thats bolted to the block, and the the knock sensor is in the block immediately above the oil pan.

You will also see the oil heating up and thinning out, which is yet another problem.

Thanks Fred, hadn't seen this response. Still have to get under there to correct this issue (put about 10 miles a month on the car lately) thanks for your input, never considered the oil thinning out angle!

Re: Y pipe question

I had a collector leak blowing on the oil filter with my old JBA shorties, and the first sign was the oil pressure dropping.

That's one of the main things I love about this forum, if there is even a remote "real world" possibility, someone has most likely been there done that. I might actually mess with the car today, day off and all. Enjoy your Memorial day Fred
