Y-pipe/manifold studs.
Y-pipe/manifold studs.
Hi all,
I sheared off one of the studs while removing the y-pipe from my stock manifolds. After I have removed the sheared stud I will obviously have to replace it with a new one.Was planning on making one from a 3/8" unc bolt.Just wondering if it will have to be high tensile or just regular steel,as this area goes through a lot of heat cycles.
Let me know what you think.
All the best,Mark.

Hi,
I had the same thing happen to me. What I did was drilled the threads out of the exhaust manifold so I could use a nut and bolt. That way I would never have to worry about that bolt breaking again and if it did, it would a easy/quick fix.
I just used hardware I had in my tool cart.
Have a nice day, in the UK.

Hi bluz28,
I was thinking of something along those lines, can't understand why GM didn't use nuts and bolts on the y-pipe when they built them.I'll see if I can get the rest of the stud out in one piece. If I can't then I'll have to drill it through and use the nut and bolt method as you suggested.
Thanks for your help, all the best,Mark
