y pipe hitting floor boards :(

I just got a 2000 camaro ss around 3 months ago and it had many exhaust leaks so I took it to a local shop and had them put in a new 2.5 y pipe... I have mac lts I might add. But now anything over 3/4 throttle the y pipe hits against the floor. I went back to the shop and they put it on the lift and showed me its got at least half an inch clearance between the pipe and the floor board. They said if I got new motor mounts it would fix the problem but I cant really go any lower with the pipe because my car is lowered and the y pipe sits only a couple of inches from the ground.... what do you guys think would be the best way to prevent it from hitting?

I went to get my car inspected, once, and when I drove away and
put a fair amount of acceleration, I felt some banging on the
floorboard - it was a broken tranny mount. And they didnt even
put the car on a lift !

Not saying this is your problem, but it's an easy check - I would check
the tranny and both motor mounts. Do you feel a 'bang' up against
the floorboard (a pretty hard bang, that is)?

urethane tranny mounts are cheap and will take longer to jack the car up than it will to replace it... just get one anyways and put it on and see if the noise goes away

Personally, I dont recommend urethane tranny mounts, based on opinions
made by TC and tranny builders. Urethane doenst flex, but the driveline
wants to, so what gives? The tail-shaft housing. Yea, a few folks report
success, but the other factor is vibration - more vibration is transferred to
the driver because of urethane mounts.

Then again, we don't know that the tranny mount is bad, yet.

Thanks I am going to check the tranny mount now hopefully thats the problem because it is an easy fix. As far as how it feels it hits pretty hard rapidly under heavy acceleration... but it doesn’t really make a ton of noise but I can really feel it if that makes sense. But if it is the tranny mount why wouldn’t I have felt it with my old y pipe?

ive been running my urethane mount since 2005 and havent had one driveline problem

and idk... it could be the y pipe but unless ur motor mounts are truly that awful right now i dont see how it would hit if it has that much clearance... my y pipe only has about 1/4-1/2" clearance and i have ~150k miles on my stock motor mounts and mine doesnt hit at all

Its also got a cam im not sure if that would make a difference in how much the pipe moves up and down because im know the cam gives it a rough idle...

well i explained my clearances and i have the CC306 so i have the rough idle too and no y pipe issue... you could try putting the front on blocks or just looking under the car and revving it.. if it still makes the noise it could be the y pipe... but if it is the pipe u should see rub marks or scratches somewhere on the underside

yeah there are scratches in the area where there is the least amount of clearance. I took a piece of rubber wrapped it in header wrap then tin foil and wedged it in-between the y pipe and floor board... I drove it around for a little and it stopped the banging but I could feel the vibrations which was kinda annoying. Then I dropped it in second and the piece of rubber fell out... so would a motor mount fix this problem? Its has 112k miles on it

it all depends, generally new mounts would make everything stiffer but would raise the engine up a little.. which would give you less clearance

Worn out motor mounts will cause engine movement which can lead to interference issues with your exhaust components. If you are having banging issues, that would be a good place to start.
