Summit brand turbo mufflers: Are they restrictive?

My exhaust is made up of: Headman longtubes, Headman S extensions, Summit H pipe, and 2 Summit brand turbo mufflers. All 2.5" pipe and mufflers by the way.

Would I gain anything by switching to a straight through type muffler?

those mufflers are somewhat thick.....I installed them on a friends car under where the rear seat is.

Everytime he left hard they scarped the ground. I would try some edlebrock 304 they are very thin......thinnest I found.

Those are restrictive too......no too loud tho, anything like a bullet or something is too loud for street use imo.......

That's right where I put mine, I've got 'em tucked up pretty good and they almost never scrape.

I was thinking of something more like an ultraflow.

Noise isn't a real problem out here, all you have to do is not be a jackass.

The turbo mufflers are almost TOO quiet. If you're in another car, even with the windows down, you can barley hear it at all.

People usually only get 5-8 hp from a stock muffer to a straight though when just replacing muffer. I doubt you'll see much gain in performance, but you would in noise.

With a name like "turbo" it's gotta flow good...........................................Any thing with chambers or baffles is garbage.

The Summit turbo mufflers are actually Dynomax Super Turbo's that had flaws so they can't sell them as new. I put a paif or 3" Summit Turbo's on my 70 SS396 and they sound perfect. Nice rumble at idle, make great sound while accelerating(and not quiet) but are reasonably quiet while cruising at 65-70 mph. I used the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on another car and they sound good at idle and get loud at WOT, but also cruise quietly. Stay away from Flowmaster and other "chambered" style mufflers, the drone and resonance will drive you crazy. It felt like my car picked up 30-40 hp by going to a full 3" dual exhaust. And my mufflers and pipes never touch the ground on this car which sits pretty low.

Can I see under your car? My 79Z with 3 inch exhaust going into Dynomax super turbo's is REALLY low to the ground. lol

Looks like I'm gunna need that 406 for the performance to keep up with the sound- sounds good on a standard small block chevy. Def. not quiet... Of coarse the cam may be the cause of that?

The pictures are a little dark. I have a pair of the Pypes 3" headpipes to the Summit mufflers and some Ebay 3" tailpipes which exit behind the rear wheels. I wanted to put some tailpipes on that exit in the stock location but these work for now. My car sits pretty low with the original wornout F41 suspension but there is almost enough room to fit a soda can under the mufflers. I could have tucked them up a little better but I didn't want any chance of them hitting the floor. I've never hit anything with the mufflers and I have speedbumps at work and my headers scrape on those.

I still have enough room to get my fingers in above the mufflers. You should have no problem fitting the same way. Did you install them or have a shop do it?

A shop, I didn't have a clue what to weld to... I went from open headers to that. lol I have almost no room, we are talking just a few inches. I dare say it's almost like the first pic posted.

Yeah, the body is rock solid and appears to be all original metal. There are a couple of spots that had some body work and weren't sanded down the best, but it looks good for a 15-20 year old paint job. It's 1 of 600 Camaros built in 1970 with the L78 396/375hp engine and it's the original VIN matching motor and has GM of Canada paperwork too. But the color was changed to black from Copper when it was redone years ago. I put about 2500 miles on it this past year. It's a blast to drive.

That's a beautiful 2nd gen! I've got a 79Z laying in pieces just begging me to put it together, if it was a 70-73 my 3rd gen would be in pieces and I'd be driving that.

I changed the super turbo's out with a set of glasspacks(perforated core, not louvered) I had laying around. It's a lot louder but I don't think I gained more than like 5-10hp, if any, and I don't think I care.
