Stock exhaust without dual cats

I have a bone stock 96 Z28 that I've been itching to modify and today I had the chance to try something I've always been curious about. My 96 has the dual cat set up and with the stock muffler it actually sounds pretty good. I had a 94 Z28 previously and I had some different exhausts on it. First I had a magnaflow with and without a cat, then I went with a hooker cat back without a cat and then I had a single in-out one chamber flowmaster on it. This car I wanted something different. Since I had a bad cat (code 420) I had both of them removed and was shocked at how good it sounded. It is actually louder than a hooker but more refined then a flowmaster. This is a great sounding set up for next to nothing. I am going to get some sound clips of it but for those of you who ever wondered what it'd sound like, it sounds awesome! Has anyone else tried this yet?

you think that sounds awesome? disconnect your y-pipe from the rest of your exhaust system and try that. BTW just out of curisity... If I disconnected my exhaust from the y-pipe will my exhaust system fall off if I drive like that? (IE i'm too lazy/cheap to even get a cut-out)

Your y-pipe is not only connected to the manifolds, but it is also secured in place by a bracket.

I feel that it sounds awesome for what it is. I mean, how many stock mufflers have any kind of tone to them? Most everyone has a flowmaster, so that seems kind of blase. It does not sound like glasspacks, and it definitely does not sound like straight pipes. I have had more cars then most in my short life thus far and have had most every kind of exhaust thought of. This has been a great result with very little investment.

Gotcha, I wouldn't chance that. Basically the only thing supporting it then is the flimsy clamps that hold up the tailpipes. You would be better off either A)completely removing the catback system or B)Just paying the 30 bucks for the cutout and whatever the installation fee is.

you're prolly right on B although something that might work is to put the bolts through and leave em loose so the catback doesnt quite connect up to the cat and use nuts (might need longer bolts to do this) to tighten up against the flange and lock the bolts
