Solved interior noise problem w/ flowmaster

Single-cat LT1 flowmaster catback with a 3.5" flowmaster single in/out and 3.5 tailpipe w/ turndown exit near rear bumper (looks like Mufflex setup). SLP 1 3/4 SS headers. Random single-brick cat. No longer has a cutout which DOES act as a sound chamber when closed.

Interior resonance was really making it hard to hear my kids in the back seat. I don't mind loud when I am on the gas some, but pulling a minor hill at cruise speed and any cruise speed with the converter locked should be tolerable. It wasn't. turning 40 might have something to do with it too. Loud just isn't as much fun as it used to be.

I looked and looked for some sort of solution because I was pretty sure just adding sound deadener wasn't going to get the job done. I posted on here and got a few suggestions. I wanted to keep good flow, but kill a good bit of resonance. Adding something in the tail pipe seemed the best solution, but weight would be a factor as I didn't want to place a lot of stress on the system. I've had vibration issues before and didn't want that to return.

In steps a Howe Racing 3.5" muffler. The thing is only 10" long and max 4" OD. I spliced it into the tail pipe which extended the tip a bit more than I could stomach visually. I cut about 4" out of that and it put the tip at a nice exposure without looking ugly. It only weighs about 2lbs.

Interior sound with the windows up is quieter across the board. Cruise at any speed and low-grade hills are no longer a problem. I can even hear the radio clearly. With the windows down it is quieter at nearly all throttle levels and the sound quality is more rich. Much of the metallic sound you get with any flowmaster is gone. The exhaust note is smoother with the highs and lows being less extreme. Its still authoritive at WOT, but some edge has come off.

It doesn't sound like any other F-body I've heard and my wife is fond of saying 'like Mustangs, you can tell if a car is an F-body or not by the exhaust note'.

Also, the popping when you get off the throttle with a flowmaster is gone. It's been replaced by a low burble.

I'll be cleaning everything up and painting stuff soon. I've got one more adjustment to make with the hangers and all the exhaust issues will be gone. Well, I still need to yank the headers, blast and coat.

That means I'll probably hit a rock or some debris in the road and dork it all up again.

Photos? Video/audio? I'm looking for a solution other than Magnaflow.

I'll get pics in a few days and try to get some audio. No comparison stuff available though.
