replace cat with muffler?

I have a 93 z28, ss clone. i got a custom exhaust with a thrush glasspack... i really don't like it. i want a louder exhaust and great sounding at the same time. i want to try something new like... after my headers and Y-pipe i want to put the 3" dynomax bullet muffler where the cat should be and run all new piping from there back, then run it out into 2, 2 1/2" or 3" dual outlets. any suggestions? noise ordinance not a problem.

A muffler right after the Y isn't anything new. Look at the SLP loudmouth, TSP Rumber and I think MAgnaflow has something like this now also.

I put a twister muffler in that spot in the I of my Borla so it won't be raspy w/out plates.

I had dual cats on my collectors, and matching Borla XR1 mufflers to bolt in their place at the track (running heavilly leaded fuel). Rest of the exhaust was a custom 3" Mufflex Y-pipe into a 4" Mufflex catback. The sound was pretty "throaty".

I would think that mufflers right off the collectors would burn out relatively quick unless they're all metal (chambered).

They've been there for 7 years now. Testing on a 97 SS with 1,350HP showed the Borla XR1's outperfomed (highest flywheel HP) and outlasted collector mufflers costing up to $500 each.

Cool. I just remembered a thread where someone was complaining about their bullets put where the cats go buring out. Its nice to know the XR1 will hold up.

Just a glorified glasspack. Those will burn out and sound very raspy.

I used a bullet muffler in place of the cat. In less than a year it had failed due to the extreme heat in this area of the exhaust system. The insides started melting and falling apart.

Find something other than the bullet, it wont last.

If it is a street car you could always do the responsible thing and use some metallic core cats. The things flow like no other and you can get some off brands for what a muffler would run. If you want the XR1, the Magnaflow spun metallic core cats would be about the same price, maybe cheaper.
