Problems After Header Install
I installed a set of bbk shorty headers on my 1995 z28 camaro.Everything sounds fine when I first start it up, But after you drive it and get it hot there is a ping coming from where the Y pipe meets. Anyone have any thoughts that might help.
Just guessing but maybe some kind of bolt?? Or maybe it isn't tight enough....Just guessing
I've checked everything out, There is nothing loose or anything like that.Is it possible that im somehow getting detonation or something like that. If so what could it be from. All I did was put on headers, Nothing to do with the firing of the motor.
sound like you either have a slight leak that develops when the metal gets hot or you have something tweeked and its rubbing as it heats up.
My old Y pipe had a similar problem. I was too close to the cross member and as it got hot it would touch the cross member just slightly and it would make a tapping noise thats sounded nothing like an exhaust problem.

I did notice that when I put the Y pipe on The exhaust clamp was up against the crossmember.I will have to take it off and see if thats the problem.Like you said it dosent sound like thats the problem though thats why I got on here to do some research and from what I here it sounds like it could be detonation from what I read. But im going to ttake the clamp off and hope that fixes the problem. If anyone else hase an idea I really apriceate the help.
The y pies on my Kooks long tubes banged like crazy.Just wrap the area were it's close with header wrap.It worked for me.As time goes on after a lot of heat cycles and bumpy roads this will probably change again.I think this is just a thing we all put up with to a degree when we do mods.Just call it the sound of horse power!
