LT's, ORY, what muffler?

96 Z28, LT1. I've got Pacesetter LT's and an ORY, but am having trouble with choosing a muffler. I've got a Flowmaster 80 on there now, but have a feeling it's holding back some noise now that the headers and y-pipe are bigger. I've heard good things about Hooker Aerochamber, Magnaflow, and Borla; Borla being the more expensive. I'd love to get it from Summit Racing, because I have credit there, any suggestions?

All your choices are fine.. I've never heard anything bad about Magnaflow, I have had them on a couple vehicles and they sound good- its not super loud but has a nice controlled sound.

If you want all out loud go with Loudmouth...its called that for a reason.

I have Kook LT w/3" Y pipe but I went with high flow cats. I used a Corsa cat back system and it sounds great to me. Not too bad idling and light throttle but really makes some noise when I step on it! Your would probably be a little louder w/o cats though.

I'd either go Borla XR-1 or SLP Power Flo

Consider the Mufflex 3.5" catback, with either the Flowmaster 30-series Race muffler (loud), or the Spintech muffler (not so loud).

There's also a 4" system, if you plan on going really big in the HP department......

Fred, what kind of horse power do you think it takes to justify the 4" mufflex system? This spring I am installing my 58mm TB (still stock 48mm right now); getting the intake manifold fully ported because it wasn't "addressed" when the block/heads were decked during the original rebuild (based on the info from the previous owner). Also will be installing Edelbrock victor series long tubes with 3.5" collectors. My heart wants to stay with the TOTL, but I feel it may be restrictive at this point.

I really like my Hooker catback and you can't beat the $379 price tag new. Magnaflow is pretty good too. I had it before. I honestly feel that the Hooker makes better power though.

I'd say with a power adder, like nitrous or forced induction, and anything over 500 HP NA, the 4" would make sense.

A guy I work with has a pair of these on his 94 Vette' at my office and it sounds really nice. Idle is mellow and not very obtrusive even in the parking garage, but when he hammers it... holy crap its loud.

You could just swap in a Spintech muffler, there around $120 ea..
When I did mine the Spintech was just as loud as the Flowmaster 80 it replaced, only with better flow an sound.

Re: LT's, ORY, what muffler?

Keep the 2OTL. Best sounding exhaust ever on an LT1 IMO. A bit quiet with the stock manifolds, but sounds amazing behind a set of LT's. I like these things so much that I have one installed on my TA, even though it leaves the passenger side of the bumper looking a bit lonely. As for being restrictive, I know someone who kept the stock 2OTL behind a 10-second 355. In fact, he even claimed to have done back-to-back dyno tests with and without the catback installed, and actually lost a few HP with it unhooked. Take that as you wish, but I saw the car run 10.50's with the 2OTL in place.

I just put long tubes on my 95 Z and used loud mouth 2 exhaust. No cats. It sounds great. I bought mine on ebay from ap1ap2 auto. $386.00 free shipping.
