how far can I drive w/ OPEN HEADERS?

I live in NC and the closest shop that does mandrel bending..is about 100 or so miles away....bout an 1.5 hrs all interstate miles.....Would it be bad to drive my car with open headers and a new motor that far?

It depends, depending where the 02 sensors are, the incoming air can hit them and cause inaccurate readings resulting in drivability issues.

Oh...I forgot to say...Im running Hooker 2210 longtube headers....and my o2 is bunged on the drivers collector....and I do have about a 6" reducer on the end of the headers. ...but other than that nothing....just wide open longtubes!

Ive got about 30 miles on the motor already just puttin around the back roads...its a roller cam...will interstate drivin be Ok with the new motor as far as break in? but mainly Im worried about the exhaust will hurt it having no mufflers.

Reason I want to take it to that shop is he can bend the tubes and custom fit them rather than having a place cut, piece and weld each angle and **** ...ya know?

Open Headers

Other than the COPS and maybe 02 off alittle
on reading, No problem

Might not be a good idea to drive into a meat locker
and shut it off after your run

Later

You should be okay, just don't beat on it and keep an eye on all the gauges. You could always have it towed for peace of mind, but if the shop is a 100 miles away, I'm sure that will be a decent sized tow bill.

From: NY...what a bad place for a nice car
u should run a set of straight pipes , maybe 6-12 inches off each collector so your 02s dont get messed with to much. Or even find a set of small bullet style mufflers and run them right off the flange.

as far as cops u do have an excuse, if u get a ticket, prove u have an exhaust on it afterwards then your excuse should be legit and theyll throw it out

with the way the underside is and the frame rails on the car....I cant run anything else than what I have already on there.......it starts to need an angle on it to clear the rails and then turn down to go under the trans cross member.

Ok...so you guys sure it will be ok to drive it that far on a new motor? being a roller cam Ive read that it really doesnt need a break in like a solid cam? just have to seat the rings.

Also someone told me to try and make sure I dont gas it and all of a sudden take my foot off the gas...that could cause me to suck cold air in and burn the valves up.....so how am I suppose to drive it 100+ miles?

I dont know if thats all that accurate. Many dragsters run open headers and i see them let off the gas half way down the track because they messed up w/out any repercussions, that ive seen.

Id say you would be fine. If made a couple 30 mile trips, open exhaust after the y-pipe, w/out any problems. Wear some earplugs though because after 20 minutes on the freeway it gets pretty annoying.

I would be worried about the heat from the exhaust blowing right out next to the plastic fuel lines under the car. Thats the only thing I would worry about.
