exhaust help for drag car
ok I have a 96 Firebird, with a older style carbed motor, my question is how do I run true duals with a aftermarket torque arm? I have a full drag torque arm and it has a cross member with it, welded in from side to side.(to subframe connectors) my headers are gonna be 2 1/8" primaries with 4" collectors. there is not enough room to drop the exhaust under the cross member, nor is there enough room to cut the floor and run the exhaust above the cross member. I would like to at least get the exhaust to run and dump near the rear end. the only thing I have come up with is the collector muffler's.
any thoughts? thanks

Or dual X dumped.. This may work.. It's under the LT1 section.. Not sure what 'old school' 421 you're talking about.. L98? OLD SB Chevy?

well with it being just a drag car for me, I will still drive it on the street. and in the class I run you have to have mufflers. I dont plan on running the exhause all the way out the back, I would like to just dump it near the axle. my problem is the large cross member that is welded in my car from side to side to the sub frame connectors for my after market torque arm. It is bent to clear for a stock style exhaust. my motor is gonna make over 800+ hp on motor alone so I need to have the exhaust to flow well for these numbers. I am thinking I can only go with collector mufflers and dump them before the cross member.
I say run 18" header extensions w/ 1 chamber Flow's and dumps at an angle outward,IMO.
From the looks of that pic,you should be able to run the exhaust under that X-member but have very little ground clearance which would be bad on the street, been there done that.

I dont think there is enough room with that type of tq arm to run an X pipe over it. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking for a light weight race car exhaust system. Needs to have mufflers for the noise restrictions around here too. I am probably going with a small single chamber or a bullet on each side and dumped before the rear. Also thinking of adding 2 cutouts off the headers for those ocasional race days.
Your best bet is to not run 4" pipe. Back off on the hears a bit. You dont need a 2-1/8" header with 4" collectors for an 800 HP motor. Dual 3 inch pipes will flow enough for 800 hp+. Maybe a 1-7/8 stepped to 2" and a 3" or 3.5" collectors. If you must run 4 inch then you can gain some clearance with oval pipe. Its expensive and truely custom but its going to get you the clearance you want.

well on my car the cross member is actually just a little lower than in the pic, my heads have a 2" flange on them, and my headers will be a 2" to 2 1/8" into a 4" collector. this is gonna be a big nitrous motor, I am actually hoping to make closer to 900 N/A HP and spray over 300 hp. so with the nos I want it to really flow. Flowmaster makes a collector muffler, that is directley attached to the collector, and i think from there I will just angle it outwards.
you could make a 4" y pipe into a 5" and dump it at the axle. mine is a 3" y and 4" dumped and fits factory loc. w/o losing ground clearence. alot of street strip guy's do it this way. Supra's have been doing it on single pipes for ever, no reason for two
i have the same problem. i have a crossmember for my torque arm and then the stock stamped piece is replaced by a bmr driveshaft loop. i am going to try to put an x-pipe directly on top of the torque arm's crossmember and stuff two 3" pipes over the driveshaft loop somehow. once i start working on it i will post pictures, it will be a struggle
