Catback exhaust vs stock exhaust w/o muffler

I'm looking to do a couple upgrades to my car this summer. As far as exhaust I currently run stock cat with Pacesetter mids. The rest of the exhaust is stock however someone at one time modified it by removing the muffler and welding in a straight tube. Then just before each stock tip there's a small bullet muffler. I need to stay emissions legal and this setup passed last summer with no problems. I was thinking about removing just the stock catback and replacing it with the magnaflow catback instead which includes a muffler. I know the setup would be more visually appealing with the stainless steal however would I be hurting performance or would it not be worth spending all the time and effort to replace. I could always get new stainless tips. the car is a weekend driver and only sees drag strips once in a blue moon.

Magnaflow catback will be a definate improvment over what you have now. I would get rid of the mids and go with longtubes and a Y-pipe with some high flow cats. You should still pass emissions with ease and it will be a great improvment.

Unfortunately because NJ is one of the strictest states for emissions any high flow cat or long tubes will not pass emissions if the tech does a visual. They gave me all kinds of problems last year when I put it through. They see cars like trans ams and camaros and they go over them with a fine tooth comb. This is why i'm stuck with the mids and stock cat. I just wanted an opinion before I waste money on a cat-back and installation and see little to no improvement on the car's performance. The engine is stock due to it being a new jasper motor. I don't want to mess with it.

Even if you dont swap out your mids for LTs, the magnaflow CB is still a good improvement from stock. If you want to know what it will sound like, check out ls1sounds.com to get good idea.
