Cat, Bullet Muffler, or Resonator

I have decided that my GMMG exhaust with my ORY setup is too loud for me. I was defintely the loudest car at my track day today, and would like to quiet it up. I am trying to decide between a resonator, bullet muffler, or a new y-pipe with cat(s) setup. How far can the cat be from the header to keep it functioning? I was thinking dual cats mounted directly to the headers would work, but would I have a problem with heat transfer to the floor and other components? Would a single cat just in front of the cat-back work? By that I mean can it flow enough not to be a big restriction because it would make modifying my existing y-pipe very easy. Would a a resonator or bullet muffler would work just as well. Which is less of a horsepower loss? The only benefit to the cat would be to get rid of the gas smell which would make it appear somewhat emissions legal. My state does not check on a regular basis, but I know if they pulled me over I could be fined.

Lastly, who makes the most compact catalytic converter?

Thanks

I have some of my questions answered. It looks as though I will need two converters, and mount them as close to the end of the header as possible.

What are people using for high flow cats? I saw SLP, Magnaflow, and Catco sell some.

I'll have to do some watching of e-bay then. The few I found new were close to 350 for the pair, but I do want to make sure they are high flow converters.
