3rd Gen Exhaust System
Hey, I am looking to replacing my exhaust system minus the headers for right now because it has rusted out on me. I have a 350 TPI engine in an 87' Z28 that was originally a 305 TPI. It is unfortunate I have to replace the pipes before the headers, but the circumstances force me into that right now. I figure since I am replacing it now though that I might as well get the system I want however I am unsure of a few things. I wanted originally to get a flowmaster exhaust system (possibly super 40?) with either SLP, Edelbrock, or Hooker headers. It would be of great appreciation of someone could tell me of a good catback system or a few that would hook up to my current exhaust manifold and allow room for header upgrades in the future. Dual exhaust is preferred, open to suggestions.
Thank You
Thank You
Well, do you want performance or do you want performance and looks? IF you want option number one, save yourself the few hundred dollars on a Catback and just buy a capped style cutout. They are like $30 and $30 more to weld in. They come with 3 wingnuts to keep it quiet. I used to run 2 wingnuts as it's faster to remove and install. Also, a nice maintanace glove and a baggy to hold the cap. Also, with a little more money saved you can have some nice coated Long Tube Headers.
If you want looks and performance, get your Flowmaster catback. IMO, Flowmaster is the best sounding system. And with those nice shiny cannons sitting underneath your bumper it will look really nice as well.

Well, this brings up a question of mine own...
What if I wanted to replace my system for the best performance and fuel efficiency? Is there such a thing? I'm guessing the short answer is true duals with cutouts.

so does it make a difference that its being attached to the stock exhaust manifold now and being upgraded to headers at a later point? will there need to be any specifications I look at before determining what model I will get
Funk, a catback is not part of the header/exhaust manifold section of the exhaust. You can do headers first or Catback first. They do compliment each other and if you did one before the other, a catback would be #1. As the extra flow of the headers would be negated by the non-flow of stock 2-1/4 piping.
Dakmor, the gains of true duals over a nice single exhaust is negligible. It's a waste of money at this point. The car might get slightly better MPG as it's more free flowing, but if you're like any other hot-blooded american, you will want to hear the exhaust more often and there is only one way to do that. Going WOT whenever possible. Get a nice 3" system and a tune up. The tuneup will give you better performance and better MPG and it's actually good for the car. LT's will give you even better MPG later on.

does anyone know where i can obtain a manifold/headers-back true dual exhaust system for my 350 TPI engine in an 87 Z28, been searching around online and cant find anything.
