Zexel Torsen rear

How tight is the clutch packs in the zexel? when i go around turns, i gotta rev it up and dump the clutch to kick the back out? Is that how the zexel is designed, or did i do something bad?

The torsen differential should not lock up, if you are having problems it's an early warning sign before it breaks. I would at least take off the cover and see how much metal is stuck to the magnet.

Re: Zexel Torsen rear

its not locking...my problem, is that it takes efforts to fishtail around turns...that shouldnt be with 400hp...

zexels don't have clutch packs, they just have worm gears. It's doing what it's designed to, obviously the more traction you have coming through turns the better right. Does it still leave to stipes coming off launch? If so you don't really have anything to worry about, like the other guy suggested if you're concerned pull your cover and look for shavings, a moderate amount will be normal but if there's a lot stuck to it, it's bad news.

Re: Zexel Torsen rear

Yeah I asked this question awhile ago. I was under the impression that in a tight turn heavy application of throttle would spin both tires into a slide. However, when I tried it would just spin one tire and I would slow down. Like you said, I'd have to drop the clutch pretty harshly to get it to slide. I was guessing that maybe the other tire is just getting better traction so it is still pushing you while the inside is spinning but the fact that I lost acceleration discounted that. I'm not into doing donuts especially with my new tires but I wonder if I would have problems doing them.

Re: Zexel Torsen rear

im not having any problem spinning both tires, and when i do a burn out, it leaves 2 lines. So im gonna go ahead and assume all is good. i am putting gears in soon, and probally an eaton diff. so im not too worried, i jsut dont wanna granade it at the track, thats embarrasing...lol...

Re: Zexel Torsen rear

Torsen's work with a multiplier, I think OEM application is something low like 2:1, or maybe even lower.. Anyways, if the slipping wheel is only putting down 100 lb-ft of torque, with a 2:1 ratio, it'll only put down up to 200 lb-ft of tq on the sticking wheel..

Also, if one wheel completely loses traction, then it'll act like an open diff.. because 0 times anything is 0. (this is why this diff is not for rock crawlers)

The T2R's have a higher bias, so more tq can be transfered.. They are also stronger than OEM T2's.. and yes, they feel very nice putting power out of a turn.. (I got one) Only a few places sell them.. Strano being one of them.

The old T2R's use to be preloaded, so that 0x case wouldn't happen.. however, I've heard they may have stopped that cause in real life, it wasn't really necessary.

if your primarily intrested in drag, might not be the diff for you though.. All that shock on launch on all those gears inside.

no, i go to the track, and the car sees maybe 10-20 runs a year. my primary use is street and street courses. but i like to have fun with it. and the occasional smokey burnout is always nice . You recamend the Eaton? with either 3.73 or 4.10?

Re: Zexel Torsen rear

dunno, never tried the Eaton.. But what I hear, from the autox and rr folks, that the T2R is the diff to use in our 10 bolts... No clutch packs wearing out is a great thing too. Sounds like your not doing any slick 5000 rpm launches so it'll be fine.. even then there's people out there stressing the stock T2's on the drag strip..

T2R is a bit pricey though.. around $500 last time I checked..

I really like my 3.73's on my bolt on 99 Z28 6 speed. I personally just wanted a hair more gear from the stock 3.42's from a standstill/very low speed roll. and thats what the 3.73's got me..

I absolutely love how my 3.73's and T2R feels on the street and autox..

Re: Zexel Torsen rear

Where can i get a T2R? Will it handle a few 2-3k launches? Need to get one kinda soon, and i just want a bit more that the 3.42's can offer.

Talk to Sam a stranoparts.com.. he's literally the only distributor I know for them. If you tell him what you want and whta your doing, he can help make the final decision..

They are beefier than the stock T2's, so I'd imagine they can take more abuse.
