Zexel Torsen

Howdy folks. My posi recently shat the bed and Im looking for a new one. Ive been looking at the Torsen Zexel unit from SLP. Its only $99.99, which looks really, really good to me compared to the $300.00+ eaton unit. What i would like to know is, is this a good means of differential replacement. Its for a slightly modded daily driver, will see some track time.

Im not sure I completely understand the torsen idea. It supplies torque to both wheels unless one has no traction, then its just like an open differential?? If I got this unit how would it be as far as launching, burnouts, donuts (dry and wet) are concerned, compared to an eaton posi unit. Will this be the same as my stock differential (posi)?

Basically, I want something that will leave two stips when I floor it, hook up good for racing, and be good for a rare donut or two. Its on a high school budget so I'd like to get the Torsen, but if its going to be too similar to an open dif, I mind as well go with eaton. Thanks as usual folks.

I have the torsen unit from slp...its perfect for what you need, i get both wheels at the track and street, the only thing is that you loose you abs because its designed for the cars with the wheel speed sensors at the axels...my abs wasnt working when i bought the car so i wasnt too worried....

Thanks z28s, thats exactly what I wanted to hear. Can anyone else concur? Whats it like as far as braking is concerned to have no abs in the rear? The front is still fine right? Thanks.

braking is the same, if you want to remove the abs unit you might want to get an adjustable prop valve, although you could do it without one...

I have 3 channel ABS and the Zexel Torson was put in when I added Motive 4.11's.

This explains why I have had an ABS INOP light that comes and goes.
My question is "Do you only loose ABS in the rear, because when the ABS INOP light is NOT on, I definetley can hit the brakes hard and not lock the front tires up.

Also, when I get a Moser 12 Bolt with 3 channel ABS will this cure this problem with the ABS INOP???

Not true. My car has 3 channel abs and a factory zexel-torsen differential. You just need a reluctor ring in the differential and a sensor mounted in the housing.

the zexels that are take-offs from slp are from '98-up cars so there isnt a sensor on the top of the differential, so a reluctor ring won't do anything....when i installed mine it looked like the reluctor ring woundn't even fit

I know what they are from. All I'm saying is it's possible to make it work because my car is a '00 and it has 3 channel abs with a zexel diff.

I have a '97 with 3 channel ABS, basicaly my undestanding is:

with traction control - 4 channel abs
without traction control - 3 channel abs

The reluctor ring will fit. I just did it last week when I put a zexel torsen posi in a 1995 rearend.

I think you need a diffrent sized reluctor ring.

I took the stock reluctor ring off of my original worn out posi and put it on the zexel torsen unit before re-installing it. It worked fine for me.

I think you need a reluctor ring for a 3 series carrier since you had the 2.73s
