Wierd Noise from t56 under 1500 rpm. Help please.
UPDATE: There has been updates go to page 2 for the latest.
I just got this car and started learning sitck on it. I noticed that it makes this wierd noise like a loose bicyle chain vibrating against a peice of metal, when I am accelerating in lower rpms (only makes the noise until it reaches above 1,500) rpm, and only if you give it more then 20% throttle.
I tested some more and it only makes this noise under 1,500 rpm. When I did the 6th gear test at about 50mph and gave it like 50% throttle something vibrates/buzzes near the dashboard. Its not quite the same noise that you hear in the lower gears, its deeper. It does it pretty much in any gear when you give it gas (more then 20%) from around idle to 1500 rpm. anyone please help.
Im almost positive then its not the engine pinging.
Car is a 96 LT1 w/ only 30k on it.

How loud is yours? Mine seems loud enough where you could hear it outside the car if you listened for it. Its not the noise which bothers me, is just that I thought something was getting ruined. Straight pipes will take car of the noise. hehe

Its whats called gear clash. Its from gear backlash. The reason you hear it when you do is because of torque spikes. It goes away at certain rpms because the spikes smooth out at higher revs. Its normal...Some are worse than others. Reason being is the backlash is determind by the center to center distance of the counter and mainshaft and wear.. Lower gears in the rear will make it heard less. you spend less time in the lower rpm range and it lowers the load on the tranny. The pull style throwouts can also make some noise. Allthough its a higher piched noise than the gear clash. To determine which it is put very light pressure on the clutch pedal and see if it still makes the noise.

im going to say your pilot took some abuse over time ....wasnt greased or changed and your tranny is going to need some serious money dumped into it...i had the same problem...over time it will get worse, and once it gets to a certain point, you can everything done right as far as a new pilot and your whole clutch assembly, but the damage is already done...just my 2 cents man...i could be totally wrong, but i had your same symtoms and it was the input shaft

If you could not duplicate the noise with very light pressure on the pedal its just the throwout bearing. Just to be clear this is in the rpm range and throttle% that you hear the noise with the pedal all the way up and very light pressure on it. Not disengauging the clutch right.
EDIT...And yes the throwout can make noise if the pedal is all the way out. The clutch system on 93-97 f bodys is how do i say "unconventional". The PP is PULLED instead of PUSHED(tried and true) in this system. The throwout bearing is retained by the pressure plate and rattles around inside the PP fingers.

It only makes the noise when: You are starting from a stop and the clutch is almost fully out but not quite there and I start giving it gas, then once the clutch is fully out or engaded it makes a rattlye up until 1500rpm, after 1st it will only rattle if you have it in any gear and are running below 1500 rpm and give it gas, not just cruising. Sometimes depending on how hard you accelerate like in 2nd gear you will hear the noise up until 2000-2200 rpm. I hope that helps, if you have any more tests that I could do to help elimnate some things just let me know and I will do em. Thanks a lot for your help.

Do the test I wrote up and if theres no noise its the throwout bearing...If there is still the same noise present its likely gear clash. Either way its no big deal its just annoying. The T56 and the pull style clutch are known to be kinda noisy.

When I did your test, I would push the pedal in about an inch and the noise seemed to be almost the same, then Id push it in a little bit more and the noise would start to go away but my clutch would start slipping at the same time.

Yea what your describing is gear clash. Some trannys ARE loud enough to be heard outside the car....Mine is. Typically high miles or loose tolerances cause this. Different tranny fluids change the noise a little too! Getting it rebuilt to the tight side of the bearing preload and endplay specs will also help a little. Both of you sound like the same problen ones just a little worse than the other. The shifter and stick selection will also play a role in the cabin noise.
