Does anyone run a spool on the street,and how bad is it,I need a new rearend and considering a spool.

 

it hasnt been to bad, ive got a moser 9 with a full spool, ive only put a 1000 or so miles on it so far and then i trashed my tranny(again), it only gets a little annoying pulling in and out of driveways, also driving and parking in tight parking lots can be a pain

 

i didnt mind it in my old car. it is a pain on tight turns but thats about it. cant beat it at the track though

 

It's not bad. I like the peace of mind knowing that I'm not going to
break it. I hear it's more of a pain with low-profile tires than tires with
more sidewall like 50 or 60 series slicks/drag radials.

 

Bad idea

Spools are not made for the street.....it will wear out the spool and axles over time

 

i have three vehicles with locked rears. two with mini spools and one with lincoln locker. have over 20k on all of them and have made 250 miles trips. it wears out tires quicker,does not impress cops or the ladies,wears out axles and spool. cheapest speed improvement you can make. it can be done but a ***** cop WILL give you a ticket for unsafe start if he hears you(the excuse that it just started doing that yesterday does not always work). i can't afford a posi and rebuild kits all the time.
the stock axles break easily with slight wheel hop. recommend better

Wow, what is a spool!?

 

a spool replaces the limited slip or open style rear end gear carrier. the spool locks the axles together all the time so there is no provision for one wheel to turn at a differnt speed than the other. it gets its name because it looks like a spool. it is exelent for staight line traction but is not any good for cornering or tight manuvering. i bought a 12 bolt used with a spool in it but converted it back to a limited slip because my car will be a street/strip car. i think a spool is probably too much for a car that will spend much time on the street.

I have a spool in my street car. Well, I call it a street car and drive it on the street.

With 26 inch nitto DRs it was pretty bad. A switch to MT 28 inch DRs and changing my driving style a bit with the spool made it alot more livable.
My car only gets driven about 3k miles a year so its no big deal for me to live with the spool.
I would never use one in a daily driver, and I am pretty hard core.

 

The trans am my brother had it in was his DD! He loved it. It still handled very well from what I remember. But then he changed out the rear.

 

I had a samari with a 9" and spool 5.43 gears and 32" superswampers loved it offroad but tight turns like gas stations it killed the inside tire. they became super slickers before long .the short wheel base hurt , longer wheelbases are easer on the tires. you have to ease on the gas at intersections with turns. lockers are the same under power but if you let off the gas in a turn they will unlock. rear tires dont last long with a spool.
