Who builds the best tranny (4L60E)?

Mine is shot and need a rebuild. I have been looking into aCM tranny or a Speed Inc. Cost differences seem to be minimal including a deep pan. ($300 on stage 3s).

EDIT: Pro built tranny
Yank
Transmission center
Yet another

My goal is a 10 second street/strip car and more than likely it will see a turbo. I only want to have to build the tranny once. I should have the car in that range within 2 years. A TC (3200 or 3500) and gears (3.73) will be going in with the tranny near the spring.

Damn I wanted to get heads before this thing crapped out.
Here is a 700R4 built tranny too Monster

What kind of pricing are we looking at? What kind of HP levels can they handle? I want this car to put out between 600 and 700 rwhp when done.

I would be surprised if you could get a 4L60E to live with that much power. I had a puppy motor 383ci that Lingenfelter Perf did for me and with only a 3600 stall converter used I was killing the tranny with a NOS dry kit when added.

I eventually had Rossler Transmission redo the 4L60E and if I recall he said it would hold up to 650hp. But if I was you go to a one of his Turbo 400's. I never broke his tranny with that motor.

You will never regret it if you go with a Turbo 400!

I thought about a TH400 but this is still a street car. COuple problems with it that I don't like. Obviously the weight, which I know is why it is stronger but still, second being the drivability. IT is a 3 speed with no OD and I hear people have problems with having to switch tires and so on to make everything work correctly. Third, having to modify my car in additional ways such as drive shaft not sure if just the yoke, crossmember and so on. Too much work for a street/strip car.

CM has built theirs and made it last so far in their 1,000hp impala so that tells me they can handle what I am gonna throw at it (600 or so hp) and I get to retain my drivability. Stall speed will be either a 3200 or a 3500, not sure yet. Also 3.73 gears.

If I remember, my 400 was lighter than my 4L60E. I also had an Ultra Bell on it, but that wouldn't make too big of a difference.

It's really not that hard of a swap. Mounting a shifter can be trial and error, but I made a few modifications that made it pretty easy(removed center console). I'll gladly trade the overdrive for the piece of mind knowing that I can launch my 3300# car off a transbrake and not have to scoop my tranny up w/ a shovel and a mop.

One other thing to look into would be a 200-4R swap. 4-spd overdrive, just like the 4L60E, but they last pretty good behind Turbo Buicks. A lot more work to get it right than a 400 though. :\

You need to decide if you want a street car or a drag car. Look at all the high tech magazines and their featured cars. 75 percent of them have either a th350 or th400. Why do you think that is? I am not saying it can't be done, but have yet to see a 4l60e last very long going low 11s or high 10s for a long time. Its just like the old saying goes. HOW FAST YOU WANT TO SPEND MONEY?.
I have decided to go the th400 route with a 4500 vigilanti with lock up, and transbrake. Car will see limited street duty. Due to the fact of the tranny and 14:1 compression. Yes I miss the days of cruising for hours in my car, but now I have a race car. You just need to decide what road you want to travel.

I want a weekend cruiser that runs 10s. Somewhere around 600 to 700 rwhp. That is the goal which I should have in 2 years. Now that I am looking, a well-built 200R4 will run just as much as a 4L60E around $3k. Maybe that should be the option.

My other option is to switch over to a T56. The cons to that are no TC, rearend will die soon, and alot easier to brake things like spin a bearing, bend pushrods, etc.

My vote is for Finish Line Performance.

I've never heard of anyone breaking one of these if you get the right set-up.

Not sure about the FLP. The Stage IV is supposed to be bulletproof(nothing is bulletproof), but a local busted a Stage III after a few months.

Like you said nothing is 100%. But I've got the level 4, just about 400 rwhp and no issues.

I'm running an FLP IV in my Impala...450+rwhp/500tq, and no problems, wonderfully crisp shifts. No one has put together as many 4L60E's living behind big motors as Chuck Johnson has...period!
