Whine in new gears???

I just installed Motive 373 gears and a auburn pro series posi into my 7.5 10 bolt. Is it normal for aftermarket gears to whine slightly? Its not extreme but I can hear them a little at 60mph and again at 90 mph. I used royal purple fluid and limited slip additive. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

How did you set up the gears? Where did you leave the backlash at? How did the pattern look?

I didn't install them, they were installed professionally by American Motorsports.

Re: Whine in new gears???

I believe non-synthetic is preferred for most posi's but that wouldn't cause the gear whine. When I did 3.73 gears in my 10 bolt, I specifically went with GM gears because of complaints I've heard with aftermarket gears being noisey due to the way the gears are cut. Now, my Strange 12 bolt with 3.73 gears is noisey also. Trying to check with Strange to see how normal this is.

Re: Whine in new gears???

It is VERY hard to setup gears with no whine whatsoever. It can be done, but it takes a meticulous approach and most people aren't willing to pay enough. It often involves a couple of attempts (i.e. having to disassemble and reassemble a couple of times). Quite a PITA. Lot's of people don't even want the job.

This a brief run-down on how it's done for a GM 12-bolt. A 10-bolt is pretty similar. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/84118/ As you can see, it is pretty much a job for someone who is really persnickity.

Are you guys sure about not using synthetic fluid? My rear came stock with 273 and a auburn posi, the owners manuel calls for 75/90 synthetic.

So the slight whine noise isn't hurting anything?

I would go to Auburn's website or refer to the instructions that came with it.

I agree, the shop that did mine reset them 3 times and still there is a slight whine.
