either will fit. However the offset of the rear wheels will be different on the 3rdgen rear compared to the 4th gen rear. the 4th gen rear is wider than the thirdgen (which is why in order to run 4th gen wheels on a thirdgen rear you need 2" to 2.5" adapters. You would definitely have to those adapters on your 4th gen if you used a thirdgen rear. I believe that is all right.

That I have no idea.. I have a 3rd gen myself.. I think you could get a posi as an option though on all 4th gens. I think the z28 and SS came with them or the appropriate cross model for the Firebird.. I think the WS6 and Formulas had the posi native and the rest were optioned.

Nope. Even the special models of the V6 were open diffs. IE Firebird GT, which got the nice exhaust, hood, suspension etc from the v8... open diffs.

I believe "G80" is the option code for LSD (limited slip differential) ... was it not offered on ANY V6 model?? (even Camaro RS??)

Pyro, your best bet (for simplicity) is getting the same vintage diff (ie: LT1 for LT1, LS1 for LS1) due to the difference in brake backing plates, and make sure you get a matching diff for either ABS only (3-channel), or TCS (4-channel) if your car has TCS. But even if you got an LS1 diff, you can switch the backing plates no problem, and you CAN convert between 3/4-channel, there's just a little bit of work involved to make a 4-channel a 3 .

This is incorrect, the "G80" LSD was an option and could be ordered on any car, IIRC the RS and Y87 cars came factory with it as part of the package

Yes, G80 option and included in Y87. Wouldn't have come on the GT or F1, since they were dealer installed packages that were largely cosmetic. And there was no "hood" included in the GT package.

+1, Camaro RS and Y87 Firebirds were both V6's with limited slip rear ends. 93-97s also got rear disks.
