What type of fluid in a T56?
What type of fluid in a T56?
Well I have the tranny out of my car for (yet another) clutch change, and we drained the fluid, and I wanted to know what type of fluid is the best for it?
I put RedLine MT-90 in my 240SX (which has an SR20DET swap) and it seems great, but will that work just as well for my LT1 T-56, or should I just use regular old gear oil?
I should mention the tranny was rebuilt and it whines a bit, and I think the person who rebuilt it and put it in put heavier weight oil in it.
Also how many quarts of fluid does it take?

Re: What type of fluid in a T56?
I would use what the manual tells you. I thought Mobil 1 would work for my differential and now my posi-unit is whinning like crazy from 0mph up to how fast I go, so i have to buy a new one now or maybe rebuild it. I think they changed the posi unit late 96 when the SS came out, don't know for sure
Re: What type of fluid in a T56?
the manual just reccommends something equivalent of gm's 80w-90 gear oil
also, you're going to need some limited slip additive
this is a MUST so don't forget it (and also the gasket if you don'thave one yet)
you can get the additive at the dealer, it'll run you about 8$

Re: What type of fluid in a T56?
So I need to use Dextron III ATF fluid, and also add a bottle of limited slip additive (which I can get at Advance Auto where I work)?
Keep in mind I am not talking about the rear end, I am talking about the manual transmission...it just seems since I am getting lots of different answeres that some may be confused.

Just use straight regular Dexron 3 ATF. No limited slip additive.
Re: What type of fluid in a T56?
4 Quarts of Dextron III?
Thanks...
BTW I am pretty sure that the guy who put the tanny back in last time after it had been rebuilt put gear oil in the tranny, because he said he was going with 90w140 or something really heavy because "the gears had gotten hot" before or something...
Thanks...
