What a T56 worth?

Hey guys,

I am considering the A4 to T56 swap. I know a kid that has a t-56 out of his 97 TA that I know I can get it for almost nothing. He had it replaced because he said the mechanic told him that something that sides in/out (pilot bearing/input shaft??) was causing the gears to grind while shifting. He also mentioned something about the fork. I am pretty sure his mechanic reamed his a-hole and just replace it with a new t-56 because he is not mechanically inclined or knowledgable enough to question it.

I am not up to speed with manual trans lingo but he doesn't work on his car at all and considers the trans a dust collector at his dad''s house.

So, what should I offer him or any ideas if the problems I mentioned are expensive to replace?
What do they go for used but in good working order? that would really help with making him an offer.

I can do my own change over btw. I may just get a t-56rebuild kit being that they are not that much. I think the complete conversion runs about $1200. If I can save a few hundred by buying this trans I will. What do you guys think?

I bought one recently for $700.

I think used ones range from $700-900 depending on miles/condition, and a new one is around $1200.

Mine went out, everyone seemed to tell me it was gunna be a ton to rebuilt it, and i didnt wanna mess with doing it myself.
