car pops out of gear

car pops out of gear
every now and then when shifting from second to third as i release the clutch it pops out of gear (this is under normal driving conditions.) if i force it it will lock into place but if i gently put it into gear it feels like it is in gear and will pop out as soon as the clutch is engaged. would like to know what is wrong with my car.

sounds like it's time for a rebuild. Mine was doing the exact same thing for a while, waited for the clutch to go and did it all at once. My trans was in great shape and there wasn't any noticable bad wear on the 3rd gear parts so I replaced 3rd gear, 3-4 syncro assembly and 3-4 fork. Usually you can see damage but on mine there wasn't much at all so I figured better be safe then sorry and replace it all the first time.

Why does everyone automatically assume its time for a rebuild?
My friend just bought a 98 SS and it pops out of 2nd sometimes when he drives it. I then drove it for 20 minutes doing different things and it never once popped out. I drove it again and it was fine. He still complains but he says it doesn't do it as much. It worked great for me. We both think its just something with him and his diriving.

Mine has NEVER popped out of 2nd, only 3rd sometimes
it pops out of third sometimes when driving VERY easy
About every month or so
Never pops out under WOT, just when taking it easy
I dont think its going to be a problem....it should last me a few years anyways....by then I should be ready to upgrade it anyway

Never had mine pop out of gear, but have heard about it. As a matter of fact one of the first mods I did was to replace my stock shifter with a B&M Ripper. I was told by some fellow F-bod owners that the factory shifter is known for popping out of gear while driving. Not sure if this is your problem or not, but could be worth a try. Like I said this has never happenened to me just what I have heard -- hope it helps!!

Dont worry its probably happened to a lot of poeple. Mine popped out of third all the time and I've been driving manuals since the day I was born. I tried that same trick...replacing the stock shifter and it didnt happen as often. But then when it did "pop" out of gear it made a more lovely sounding BANG! I left it alone only to find out that I needed a rebuild. Wish I was digi cam equipt so I could have taken pictures of my bearings....you guys would have loved it!
