What Are Signs of a Tranny Going Out?
What Are Signs of a Tranny Going Out?
Like signature says.....96 A4. Today, pulled out of a gas station into traffic...gave the throttle a gentle nudge...rpms shot up to 4k, but didn't feel like I was moving forward, until I let off the gas a little.
Tranny's original...99K miles. Tires are in good shape. It was raining before, but not sure if tires were spinning. Windows up and music up even higher..couldn't hear anything.
So is it:
1) tranny slipping?
2) stock TC slipping?
3) just spinning of the tires?
I'm hoping it's #3. Tomorrow, going to go out and do a couple of "mild" launches to see if I can duplicate this.
I just have no idea what it feels like the tranny slips...is there a way to test it? What's it feel like? What's it feels like if the TC slips?
I ask, cause I have a Vigilante 2800 ready to go in, but I might hold off if I need a new tranny instead.
Any input is appreciated.

Re: What Are Signs of a Tranny Going Out?
If you're running the stock torque converter, it doesn't slip much.
A word of advice, if you have a Vigilante waiting to go in, don't put it in until you KNOW the trans is OK. If you put it in there, then the trans goes south, you can almost bet the converter will be trash (or have to be taken apart and cleaned out).
If the trans is slipping, it could be low on fluid, could be worn clutches, or failed hardparts inside the trans.
It will feel like a manual trans car with a slipping clutch.
It might also hit the rev limiter before shifting at WOT.

Re: What Are Signs of a Tranny Going Out?
Did you have any side to side motion when you started accelerating? If so then it was almost definitly wheel spin. Not saying that it couldn't be wheel spin if there was no side to side rebound but most of the time there is.
If you only felt it this once and couldn't reproduce it I wouldn't worry about it too much for now. The tranny will let go (most of the time) after it has been slipping consistantly...
Just follow through with your thoughts of testing it tomorrow, just turn the radio down so you have a slightly better perception as to what is going on.
Oh yeah like stated above don't put the new converter in if there is a possiblitity the tranny is bad, you could damage it too when the tranny goes out...
Good luck with it...
