what series do I have?
Hi everyone, I will try to explain my situation to the best of my ability.
I bought a M6 (T-56) 94 lt1 which had a transmission swap from A4. Now supposedly I have a 3.23 rear end which was reused from when the car was an A4. I know about the cutoff for series 2 and 3 but since I had a tranny swap I don't know which one I have anymore. Since it is a M6 now would that imply that only a 3 series would work? And if that is the case how do I have the same gears left over from the A4.
Any ideas on which one I have? I'm trying to order a set of 3.73's this week and I obviously need to know which series I have presently.
Thanks in advance.

If the car was originally A4/3.23's, and it does in fact still have 3.23's, then they're on a 3-series carrier, same as factory 3.42's (M6) would have. So order 3.73's for a 3-series carrier!
Probably NOT. I don't think anybody makes 3.23's for the 2-series carrier, whereas they DO make 3.73's + (aftermarket) for the 2-series.
Even if it "had" 2.73's, but now "has" 3.23's, somebody switched either the entire axle housing, or they switched just the carrier to put the 3.23's in.
I'm saying with confidence that (assuming you DO have 3.23's) you have a 3-series carrier
.

Unless the carriers were swapped. My build code says GU2 but is a three series carrier. But Pete is right there is no one that I know of that sells 3.23s for a 2 series carrier. It is a very logical assumption that you are running a 3 series carrier. Good work Pete!! I would have never thought of that.
Uh oh's!!!

Looks like they DO make 3.23's for a 2-series!!
BUT, I don't know of ANYBODY who opts for 3.23's, unless it's the factory option, or they could get a set of used factory gears (who actually buys AFTERMARKET 3.23's ... I mean, really?!
). Like Fred suggested, check the codes to see what it originally came with ... if it shows GU5, then I think we could rubber stamp this one "confirmed"!

All right guys, problem solved. I ran over to the Z and checked the glove compartment. The code is GU5 so the 3.23 are factory and I have a series 3. Thanks for all the help especially you Pete!!
