What Series Am I? Best 3.73's?

Sorry, still getting used to all of this.

I have 2.73's on my 93 Z28 M6, what series is this? I'm guessing two. If someone could do a break down of this for me, that'd be great.

Also, what Gears and Gear Installation (part numbers or links would be sweet) do you guys recommend? (I plan on going to 3.73's). I've been looking around and I've seen that Summit Racing makes a set and for the most part Summit "Brand" stuff is normally name brand with there name on it. And they are about $50 cheaper, anyone here tried them out?

Why do you have 2.73's with an M6? I would make sure of that first. The ring gear that fits the 2 series carrier (2.73) is thicker and will not work in a 3 series carrier.

If his 1993 came with an M28 transmission, he could indeed have 2.73s.

Year Model/Optn 1st * 2nd *3rd *4th *5th 6th *Final
---- ------------- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- -----
1993 Manual/M28 3.36 2.07 1.35 1.00 0.80 0.62 2.73 (GU2)
1993 Manual/M29 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 0.80 0.62 3.23 (GU5)

First gear will be extremely low with 3.73s and an M28.

That very basic info seems to elude many people........

Yeah, Injuneer had to go over the 93's being different with me once. If it weren't for him I would be putting 4.10's in.

What would you recommend then? If I do anything numerically lower than 3.73's I mite be screwing myself a bit because I do have an M28 but the only gear with a major difference would be first. If I were to go with 3.42's my first gear would be great, but then my 2-4th would feel like a stock M29.

Ha, I just noticed in the f-body faq (I copied and pasted from there) that they mistakenly said GU4 for 3.23s (should be GU5). I edited my post. Even though the faq is a good source, there are few errors in it.

What is the purpose you're trying to serve by changing your gears? Are you trying to improve your 1/4 mile time? If so, what speed are you going through the traps? With the mods you have listed, I'd guess around 105mph. What gear are you going through the traps in? I'm assuming 3rd. Are you planning on doing anything to significantly increase hp/trap speed in the future? It seems a bit of a quandary changing rear gears with that transmission. Even if you went with something as low (numerically) as a 3.42, that would be the 1st gear equivalent of having steeper than a 4.10/MN6 combo (3.36 x 3.42 = 11.49; 4.10 x 2.66 = 10.90). IMHO, I'd keep the stock ratio. Using the stock size tires, you can trap up to 118mph @ 5700rpm in 3rd gear, and you wouldn't have more traction problems or gas mileage drop that you would by going with a higher numeric rear ratio.

Yeah, I think someone else said putting 3.73's in my car would be like putting 4.56's in others (in first gear atleast). I haven't ran the car at the track yet, hopefully I'll get to that on Friday night.

Anyone else want to throw a opinion on this; keep it stock or go to 3.73's?
