What is "normal" aftermarket gear noise?

I just installed my 4.10's and they only make a little whining noise at 45mph and above. The faster I go the louder the noise gets. Is this the normal aftermarket gear noise that I've read about or do all the aftermarket gears make different noises for different people?

Nothing is normal when you replace the stock gears. you get noise for some of these reasons:
Gears are cut for a racing application.
Ratio not suited for a daily driver
poor installalation & gear set up
etc etc

Ditto, silence is normal unless there is an install problem or the gears are more straight cut for strength. Who made your gears?

[QUOTE=. Who made your gears?[/QUOTE]
I am not really sure. I bought them from nationaldrivetrain.com. They are supposed to be their platinum torque gearset, but they came in a motive box.
I am sure they are set up correctly I did it myself.

well my buddy put ratech's in and they're quieter than stock gears, but they should be silent unless they are race gears or something

Re: What is "normal" aftermarket gear noise?

Let's see.....
I believe I bought my gears from national drivetrain also; it's been awhile. My gears are Motive, and the person I talked to on the phone said they would be pretty noisy, but I bought them anyway like a dumbass.
Yeah, they are noisy. I even had them rechecked and reinstalled by Randy's Ring and Pinion (very reputable), they said my gears are fine, wearing fine, everything was good.....but they're still noisy. I just think a straighter cut gear built for strength rather than silence is going to make some noise.

My Strange gears are straighter cut, have been holding up great, are a bit noisy on decel and at certain MPH you can hear them more than others, but I don't care as long as they last, which they have.. held up to over 100 track passes, and quite a few miles.

Re: What is "normal" aftermarket gear noise?

From what I have read most 4.10's whine just a bit.
I dont consider myself an R&P pro but I feel very confident in my work, I have done several Jeep install and came out perect dead silent every time. Although the Dana gears are easier to do.

Anything more than a bit of whine is usually a bad install. I had motives orange box and they screamed, I got the Randys Yukons and they are much better, they are actually a 2 cut gear very similar to OEM GM spec plus they have a lifetime warranty so if I rip the teeth I can just put a new set in for free.

Mine have actually gotten a bit quieter as time has gone by. I also got a stud girdle which allows more fluid to be used to reduce the temp, that has helped some not to mention the loud Borla and no cat.

Thanks for all the replies, after a couple of days and about 40 miles of EASY driving the noise is almost gone. For $135 shipped including the install kit I have nothing but a for nationaldrivetrain.com
