What makes our rear ends weak?

I'm doing one wheel peels and need to get it fixed. I'm not sure what to do though. Can you replace the clutches in the rear? Is it the differential that is weak or is it the whole rearend? I am looking into an eaton unit but I'd have to get new gears because I have the carrier for my 2.73s. Any ideas? I'm gonna be at the track as much as possible so I want it to hold and last.

Re: What makes our rear ends weak?

To my knowledge the stock units are either Zexel Thorson or Auburn units, neith er of which is re-buildable. Eaton units are rebuildable. If you hit the track with the stock unit, rebuilt or not and you have sticky tires, manual tranny, your days are numbered. Auto's seem to last longer, but still will eventually kill it too. Might be a year, might be first time you really hook. Not very much you can do to a stock rear end to make it much stronger that's worth the money IMO. If you want piece of mind look for a 12 bolt or a 9 inch, I'd recommend Strange, even though I personally run a Moser, because of the TA mounts. Pricey I know, but if you want to play......

We have specific forums for specific topics.... "weak rear ends" don't belong on LT1/LT4 Engine Tech. Please post on the correct forum.

Moving to "Drivetrain".

What makes it weak:
hmmmm
7.5" ring gear
small diameter pinion
crush sleeve
poorly welded tubes
weak axles

anything else?

Re: What makes our rear ends weak?

Well my question is if I get the eaton unit will allow me to get drag radials and launch hard or if it will still break with that. I don't have the money right now for a 12 bolt or I would just go that route because I want to spray. I just know that the converter I bought is not gonna help me with my traction lol.

Its still going to greande, the ring gear is the most common failure.
