What kind of gears?

Ok, im putting in a 383 with LE2 or LE3 heads with custom cam. Changing the tranny and getting a 12bolt rearend. What gears should I get with this. 3.73s seem to be popular but Im getting alot of people saying it doesnt do much. That maybe I should go with a 3.90. I wanna know yalls opinion on this..

Might want to mention whether you are installing a 4L60E, a T56 or some other tranny. That will affect gear selection. Also need to know the estimated flywheel HP, engine redline or anticipated shift points, tire diameter and 1/4-mile MPH if that is what you are using the car for. You want to pick a set of gears that lets you run through the traps at the cars maximum MPH, while not shifting out of the 1:1 gear (3rd in an A4, 4th with an M6).

is this a Daily driver or trailor queen?

DD = 3.73s usually
Trailor queen usually has some taller tires and go with 4.10s or higher.

If you are in the middle I'd go 3.90s and run the 1/4 and watch where you shift and adjust tire height accordingly, like injuneer said.

An auto tranny (4L60E) doesn't have a flywheel... it has a flex plate. And if it did have a flywheel, it would only have one of them. Getting a new one is not important to the discussion. "Flywheel" HP refers to the engine's HP rating at the flywheel (or flexplate)..... i.e. before drivetrain losses (as opposed to "rear wheel" HP).

You might want to investigate the information I requested, so that you don't end up spending a lot of money for a 12-bolt rear with the "wrong" rear axle ratio.

This is a good question because i've been thinking about changing the gear in mine, so I'll see what you think and give you as much info as possible, My car is a daily driver and i more then occasionally get on the highway and run it up over 130 but i was thinking since most of the time it seems to be just a red light racer that a little more low end might be nice without dropping a lot of money in the engine, I have a lt1 its a jasper crate but its built to stock spec, 100 shot n20, cold air intake and that's about it, I just had my trans rebuilt (4l60E) with a trans-go kit, corvette servo, upgraded converter etc, I don't plan on doing much to the engine but i do plan on in the near future to upgrade the map (granatelli for cold air) digital 6 so i can can a perf tune and ret for the n20. Im running 18" rims all the way around but i used a tire calc and got the tires sizes so the overall tire dia is very very close to stock. I plan on upping the shot to 125 also. I guess thats all I can think of.
Thanks.
