What driveshaft do I have?

What kind of driveshaft does my car have? When did they start putting aluminum in the cars? I have a 97 Z28, I have bad vibration after 90, just wondering if an upgrade to an aluminum shaft would help.

Most likely you have a steel drive shaft. Take a look under the car, if its rusty looking than its steel, if its still silver than its probably aluminum. Any f body from 82-02 will fit your car.

I believe Aluminum DS's weren't on F-bodies until the LS1 era. So one year after you. An AL DS should eliminate the high speed vibration. Or you could just get yours balanced.

You're forgetting the 1LE shaft [stronger than LS1 too]
That's what I'd get [and have ] as a replacement ..
about 230 from Cromer

Yes I did forget about that. Thanks for giving me the heads up. I have considered a 1LE shaft over Aluminum as well.

I will warn you that LS1 driveshafts are not a fix-all for the vibrations...

I put one in my car thinking it would solve the vibration issue I was having (Anything over 70-75 was completely untolerable).. it made me be able to to 75-80 instead....

I coughed up the $$ and bought a Denny's Nitrous Ready and now... it's unbelieveable how different of a car it is... 140+ smooth as glass with ZERO vibes... The shaft is balanced to 8K rpms.

LS1 shaft fixed my vibes. It was a light vibe from 75-85, from 85+ it was very bad. Put in an LS1 DS, smooth as ever now.

Turns out the splines on my stock yoke had a very slight twist in them and the caps from the stock rear u-joint just fell off when it was removed. 155k miles will do that to the u-joints, but what would cause me to twist the yoke splines and not break the rear? Luck?

PS - I did break the stock spider gears hooking on a 2nd gear downshift with the 1st Spec Stage 3, would that have done that?
