Weights of different rear ends
Weights of different rear ends
The thread on the rebuilt 8.8 rear has me thinking. Does anyone know the difference in weight between the 10 bolt, the 8.8, the 12 bolt, and the 9 in. rears?
I know the 12 bolt is what, 40 lbs. more than than the 10 bolt, right? I have no idea how the 8.8 or the 9 compare.

When my Strange 12-bolt arrived (ABS, super strength posi, aluminum cover) I weighed it, one end at a time on a bathroom scale and it was 165#. After I got the stock 10-bolt out, I did the same, and the weight was within 5#. I couldn't believe it, but that's how close they were. The Strange uses the same size tubes as the factory rear axle assembly, and the identical mounting brackets to the stocker. But appears to have more cast iron in the center section, and obviously has a heavier posi, gears, and axles. Could not explain why the weights were so close.
You would think the manufacturer would know, so I called Moser and Strange. I had emailed Strange before, but hadn't received a response yet. On the phone, a lady at Strange told me that it was 170-175 lbs. Moser said theirs was 200 lbs, with a 9" about the same. Then I got a response from a gentleman at Strange via email that said it was 195-200 lbs depending on whether it had a spool or posi, which gear, etc. So, I've got two numbers for Strange rears and one for Moser. Neither company seemed too sure on the numbers. They were derived by taking the approximate shipped weight and subtracting the approximate weight of the packaging.
I'd like to try to find out the weight of the stock 10 bolt on our freight scale. I'm just interested in how much weight a car gains by upgrading the rear.
