weak link on the 10-bolt

What breaks or fails in the factory 10 bolt? I'll be getting heads and a cam eventually to get me around 425 hp. I've got an auto w/ street tires, so that could be my saving grace, but should I be concerned about putting that much power to the rear end?

stock motors brake the factory rears there junk, the ring gear is so small thats the one weak link the posi tends to brake spider gears as well, if you can swing it save your money for a 12 bolt dont put money in to a 10 bolt money pit.

The gears/carrier break nearly everytime. Very, very few people have broken an axle. I agree with lethal, don't allow your 10-bolt to become a money pit!

Re: weak link on the 10-bolt

I broke the pinion 3 times. It always lost 3-4 teeth, then the flack would chip the ring gear. I never broke a posi or axles. It's cheaper/ less hasle to buy the 12 bolt now than keep breaking 10 bolts. However, my 10 bolt only ever broke at the track on slicks. If you stay off the sticky tires and the drag strip it will last you all season.
