Vibrating, Grinding Noise From T56

I pulled and swapped out my engine and it is running great, but the tranny (T56) didn't do so well. I reused all the stock equipment (probably should have replaced some while in there). When I am starting from a stand still and am releasing the clutch pedal, half way through the pedal stroke the transmission makes a BAD vibrating noise. It does not happen every time, maybe 70% of the time. There seems to be an increased resistance or load on it at this time as well (a little more likely to stall, or harder to get going). It will happen with a 1st gear or 2nd gear start (haven't tried any higher), but does not happen in reverse. Once driving, it runs okay...loud, but no louder than it was before. Any ideas?

I took it to a shop and he said that he thought some bearings were bad and I needed a rebuild (quoted $1200-$2100 depending on how bad). I really wanna avoid that if I can. Some things to consider that could be linked to the problem would be that I did not use a special alignment tool when installing the clutch, and when I went to drain the tranny fluid originally only about 4 ounces came out instead of the 4 quarts it is supposed to have . I really appreciate any ideas! I am so tired of working / spending money on this rebuild

I suck at writing posts that people reply to I was wondering if I might be getting some sort of "clutch chatter" due to not using the alignment tool?

As long as the tranny went in OK and you didn't have to use the bolts to pull it into place, everything will be ok - not using the tool just risks not being able to get the input shaft/clutch/pilot bearing lined up. Once it's together, you're good.

I get a grinding noise in neutral with clutch engaged (foot off pedal) ever since doing my engine. raising the idle from 650 to 950 eliminated 80% of the noise, but unfortunately also 80% of the mean idle lope.

It had some trouble getting it lined up but when I did, I slid all the way in no problem.

And as far as the noise with the clutch engaged and in neutral, I do know what you mean and I have always had that too. This new noise is A LOT louder and only occurs while trying to get going forward from a stop

paste. look at this thread. https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/sho...grinding+noise I came across it while searching for "grinding noise" since I'm having the exact same problem this guy is. hope to rip into it next few days. Sounds like this is whats happening to mine... My car has a d1-sc procharger dual intercooled supercharger on it cranking 6 psi boost (dont want to go higher with stock block as I dont want to hutrt the engine.) anyway, stock clutch and damn near double stock H.P. I smelled clutch for a few days before the grinding started so I believe its clutch related.

FWIW,

Brian
