Very weird tarnny prob inside...

Ok, this is about my 1997 Sonoma 5 speed. The tranny is an nv3500 (pos). I was driving home from work back in December when an old lady pulled out in front of me. In the heat of the moment I accidently down shifted to second instead of 4th. Then when I came to a stop it was really heard to get in gear. Then a little later it would make a loud squealing sound and wouldn't go in gear. So I just put it up thinking it needed a new clutch and throw-out bering job. Well I get it towed to my friends house and he takes it for a drive with no problems! I went and picked it up and it drove fine. What the heck is going on?! How do I check the fluid in this transmission? Thanks for any info.
