Upgrading gears
Upgrading gears
Hi,
I am running stock 2.73's in my 1994 Z28, A4.
I am going to go with 3.42's I think because of economy and gas prices.
Anyone have opinions on installing used rear end parts such as diffs or gears?
thanks
Daniel

Re: Upgrading gears
I'd suggest going with 3.73s which will give you about 12% more torque to the wheels and probably will not affect gas mileage that much.
As far as using "used" parts, it all depends on "how" used.
I have a ring a 3.42 ring and pinion that I had swapped out of my 97SS when I went with 4.10s. They only have a few thousand easy miles on them, but I don't know what else you will need. I.e, is your carrier suited for 3.42s or 3.73s or will you need another carrier.
You might want to post in the correct section for your answers.
BTW, which ever way you decide, I would suggest going with solid shims in lieu of the crush sleeves (you will still need the crush sleeves to get the correct spacing). I am certain there is someone else on here can advise you better.

Re: Upgrading gears
HI,
from what Ive been told, around, 3.73's will not kill me since I have overdrive in my A4 and in addition will provide that extra ummpph in the quarter.
I was going to go with 3.42's but all in all, still playing with all ideas.
Unfortunately, my MSD wires have gone bad and the stock coil as well so money is being diverted.
Are MSD wires worth it on a mostly stock vehicle?
Daniel
P.S. Out of curiousity, how much would you want for the 3.42's with shipping.
