Unique T56 noise.....help me figure it out!!!
Unique T56 noise.....help me figure it out!!!
Lately my T56 has been making this rubbing/moan sound when shifting through the gears especially the 1-2 shift and 4-5 shift. It sounds like two pieces of rubber rubbing against each other, but I can feel a vibration too through the tranny when I make the shift and the sound is present. It will also do the noise with the car in 1st gear, clutch pedal in, while giving a little rev to 2500 rpm car standing still. It first started doing this after I drive 1,400 miles in one day which 98% was 6th gear driving. The noise went away shortly, but will come back whenever I am in 6th gear for over 15 mins. I am guessing maybe a bearing is wearing out or something.
The hydraulics have only 9,000 miles on them as well as the clutch. So I know those two things are fine. I also have the solid pilot bushing and not bearing. If you guys can shoot me in some direction so I can possibly prepare myself for a tranny rebuild that would be great! TIA!

Right now I am running the Honda ATF and am going to switch back to Dexron III this evening. I will post back to see if that makes a difference.

Re: Unique T56 noise.....help me figure it out!!!
My car is almost doing the same thing. When shifting from 1-2 it makes a rubbing moaning sound, I don't even have to be high in the revs, it will sometimes do it when I am just driving normally. Also it will do it when I downshift. When coming to a stoplight fast and try going into 1st to scare off those pesky imports, it will make this sound. I thought it was my clutch but my dad said the clutch wouldn't make that noise. Any suggestions???
Re: Unique T56 noise.....help me figure it out!!!
Both of you try this. Run the car at speed and push the clutch in ...keep it in gear and let the engine idle. See if you hear the noise. I just experenced a similar thing. It turned out for me that the input shaft was too loose and it hogged out the solid pilot bushing in 200 miles!!! The noise is the input shaft rolling around the pilot bushing very fast. I am NOT 100% sure this was my only problem. I will know for sure in a few weeks when I yank the tranny to check the pilot bushing. I want to be sure that I dont have a misaligned tranny. As you can see Im running a one off setup but the above still applies.. I replaced the bearings and reshimmed the tranny. The tolerances were pretty bad and I noticed I had the upgraded syncros so I would guess someone replaced some parts and didnt reshim properly.
EDIT... I see you cant tell I have a one off setup so heres some info.95 t56.cf df push clutch.howe hyd throwout bearing.wilwood master cylinder on mixed and moded b-f-bodypedals.3/8 spacer.extended polot bushing.

Re: Unique T56 noise.....help me figure it out!!!
Well I changed out the Honda ATF fluid last night and put in regular Dexron III (Castrol Dexron III/Mercon fluid). I had a meeting down in Indianapolis today which is roughly a 2 hour road trip and figured that would be perfect to see if the fluid change made a difference. NO MORE NOISE!!!
I don't know why the Honda fluid would have made my tranny make that horrid noise as a lot of guys on this board seem to run it with no problems. I appreciate all the feedback and ideas from everyone and I recommend that if any of you guys are experiencing something similar to drain your tranny fluid and put in 4 quarts of new Dexron III tranny fluid.

i have royal purple fluid in there right now but it has been in there for over a year so I doubt that is it. should i just yank the tranny and see what the problem is???
Re: Unique T56 noise.....help me figure it out!!!
No, additive is needed for your transmission fluid. It is the rear end fluid you are thinking of that needs the GM limited slip additive little bottle. If changing your tranny fluid does not help your problem, I would drop the tranny and look for a broken clutch disk or bad pilot bearing and go from there.
