TV cable problems?

I put a 54mm TB on and the shifts now seem too soft. I tried adjusting the cable according to the service manual. What I did was to push the button, pushed the slider all of the way back, released the button and then moved the linkage to full open. The manual says that the slider should "ratchet" out when the lankage is moved to WOT. It doesn't. When the TV cable is taken off of the linkage, the TB will open a good deal more. Once the cable is on it will only open so far before the TV cable becomes taught and won't move any further to allow the TB to completely open. It seems that if the slider would actually "ratchet" out it would provide enough movement to fully open the TB. If I hold the button and pull out on the cable, the slider will come out but not once the cable is adjusted and the button is released.
Am I doing something wrong here or is the cable not functioning properly since it doesn't "ratchet" out?
Thanks

When opening the throttle body are you sure you are opening it with enough force to let the cable ratchet out? It shouldn't need that much force but don't be afraid to give it a good tug to ratchet out. But it shouldn't stay unratched, that means the cable is probably broken and you should just pick up a new one from the dealer.
