turbo 400 question

ok, I just bought a car (77 camaro) it has a 383 stroker with a turbo 400 tranny its a drag car. Well, my question is: Is the transmission suppose to shift when its in DRIVE(D)? or do I have to shift It 1,2 then D? because when I put It in drive Its just staying in one gear. The tranny also has a 3500rpm stall. I am 17 and dont really know much bout transmissions but I know some what bout engines.

Re: turbo 400 question

Does the tranny have a "manual valve body"? If so, you need to shift it 1-2-3... it can't shift itself.

Re: turbo 400 question

oh, ok yeah it probably has a manual valve body(how do i check). I am sure it does because the guy that sold it to me had put a B&M ratchet shifter. So when I drive it I shift it every time form 1,2 then D? or can I just leave it in D and take off?

Re: turbo 400 question

With a manual valve body you have to shift it all the time, it has no automatic function anymore.
You upshift, you downshift. Its a manual without a clutch pedal.
