Trutrac trouble

Pulled diff cover on my strange 12 bolt tuesday, big suprise my truetrac with less than 1500 km is cracked.

Call eaton tech line with problem and sent them photos. Eaton solution, break off cracked piece with vice grips

This is the same tech line that before I bought diff told me it would be more than enough for my application and if I had a problem they would look after it.

Take a look at photos and chime in, I think its a problem with design definately not abuse or install problem.

It will be a long time before I buy anything associated with Eaton.

I’m getting ready to order a Moser 12-bolt and I’ve been on-the-fence on which posi carrier to get (TrueTrac or Eaton Posi w/ Clutch Plates). I know Moser is really pushing the TrueTac units, but I kind of like the old-school rebuildable type posi units. After reading your post I think I’ve made my mind up, I’m going low-tech with the traditional type Eaton posi. Also, I know Eaton now owns TrueTrac.

If I had to do it again, stange s60 with a dana powerlocker thats old school.
the dana diff is huge and the posi unit is the same one guys have been hunting for used for decades.

Stange is shipping s60 units with a driveshaft for a little more than a 12 on its own and you use stock abs senser in housing.

Anyone wanna buy a 12 bolt.

I rebuilt my 4th gen rear for a swap in my 86 camaro. I also used a TrueTrac because of the overwhelming reviews on them. This is the first time I have heard of a problem with this Carrier and it isn't even about a mechanical issue (unnless this crack is causing problems?). I would call up Detroit and show them the pictures that you have posted. My TrueTrac does not have a crack so it definitely shouldn't be there.

Sent them the link first, they had engineering review it and told me it isn't an issue. I would like to see one of them put a cracking diff in any of their cars.
I think pieces of hardened metal floating around in a diff could cause problems.

The main problem I have with this is that it is not an abuse issue it is a defect! and eatons actions show they have no interest in customer support.

That still is strange to me. I haven't put my rear in the car yet so I pulled the cover and looked at it last night. That is one thick case, mind you mine is in a 10bolt, and looks like it is at LEAST 1/4" thick. I would definitely tighten the strings and not take no for an answer.

When you bought it did you remember seeing the crack?

The case is thick but undercut there. I definately could not see a crack when I installed it.

The guys at Astro Automotive (popular hotrodding engine masters) took a look at it and they think it cracked when it was heat treated during manufacture.

Even well designed parts can and do fail from time-to-time. However, I'm with you here, the larger issue is Eaton's failure to provide product support!

I wouldn't be able to live with that cracked carrier in my rear-end. The correct course of action for proper product support, would be to FedEx you a replacement unit (get you going as quick as possible) and then perform failure analysis on your old unit to determine why it cracked.

Thanks for the support,
l cracked the piece off and put diff back in. I'm not sure if I should run it, if it does loose another piece of metal what would be the worst that could happen.
